Who has a completed Morgan dollar collection here?

I don't understand the whole sniping thing. If I want a $300 coin, I'll put in a realistic max bid accordingly and forget it. If I'm not bidding, nobody is paying attention, and somebody had put in a $100 max bid on that coin instead, and you wait until the last second and "snipe" it for $101, good for you. But that $100 bidder was dreaming anyway. In other words, sniping only works when you're only up against other people with unrealistic expectations. If I'm in it with my reasonable max bid, you're not sniping it from me - you're paying more than I was willing to pay, and more than anyone else was willing to pay. Sure, you can definitely get a good deal when reasonable buyers are all asleep, but if a seller is unhappy about that they should have set a reserve price or marketed it better. I've never once felt that I'd been "sniped" - somebody just wanted it for more than I was willing to spend.

Sniping at night or on weekends is a futile effort. It's when the auctions expire at odd times during week days that it pays off. Of course, a rare coin in really great condition is going to attract more attention. Coin dealers know this however, it's the individuals selling their collections is where the deals are to be had. Dealers also know no reserve auctions sell better because it chums the water for competition, it's a human nature thing to "not want to lose". FOMO is the best way to describe that.

 

When the bids get to some serious money, like $1,000 or more, most bidders don’t take kindly to getting outbid by $1, with no recourse. There should be a fair increment, like $100, or even $50, if cut bids are allowed. That’s what legitimate auction firms have fixed increments which increase with the size of the bid.

 

I completed a full graded set a few years ago and was very proud of it. It took a long time. Post covid, prices seemed to have doubled overnight. So I sold it to a dealer for a huge profit. It was emotionally hard to do.

I still have quite a few Morgans. But now my criteria for purchasing is, “ooh…. That’s cool and unique”.

 

For example. MS graded set of 1886 in old PCGS holders. Why? I have no idea.

I started to see if I could do the same thing with old Anacs soapbox… but in PL.

 

I completely get that. There are some years/mint marks I have a half dozen of duplicate MS examples in my graded collection. VAMs also get my attention as well.

 

You're triggering my envious side... that collection is something I'm striving for, slowly, so I don't bankrupt ourselves here in the process!

It doesn't help that I also generally like other old US coins, so my 7070 is also starting to cost a pretty penny (pun intended). I also have a few other albums I'm filling out that have taken the backseat in terms of priority, but they're mostly lower-grade so far.

You can have a complete set without the 1895. There was no business strike for that year in P. Now if you want the 1895 proof, you could just forgoe that and complete another Morgan set with that money.

 

I do have the peace set also. Here it is.

I've barely touched Peace dollars, but by chance/luck I do already have the 21, 27d, and the 28 and maybe 4-5 more common dates.... @#$%^!!! just discovered that I only have 2 of my peace dollars in my registry 21 and 22.. then I remembered most are in icg slabs so wouldn't be there but I know more then 2 are ngc/pcgs so now i gotta crack open the safe and look for myself lol

My Peace set is completed git that done about nine years ago.

 

That 1895 on a wishlist forever! Maybe take a HELOC for a nice MS-67 or 68 and let them take the house. It might be worth it

 

I've got far too many needs to list out the specifics for a full album, but I've gotten my 85-CC, 95-O, 99, and 03-O out of the way. The 95-O could use an upgrade (again) down the line, but the others are MS coins. The 85-CC is in a GSA (my profile pic) so not in my albums, but I'm ok with that.

 

Morgans comprise such a big set. Hats off to anybody who completes it or even comes close! I'm not even going to try; I decided I just wanted 1 MS66 Morgan, and one key date. Here they are:

 

One day I'll post my complete graded set. Most are MS UNC except the really tough ones. I've still got a little ways to go. I'm mostly missing the CC's except for the easy ones. I've got many duplicate years years/mints, always upgrading or trying to. 140 graded slabbed coins so far. Some from my collection, some purchased raw and submitted for slabbing, some purchased graded.

Thank you. I can almost do a complete Peace dollar set without buying a single coin, just need the 1921, and the 28's. I'll work on that later and do the submissions for grades and complete that mission. I still don't know how to grade those, it's a mystery.
