Picked up a nice Type-II 1981-S Roosevelt. I've gone on PCGS to check the registration/certification and it shows a PR68, standard holder, population 21. But my question to my expert friends, DCAM or not ? Help the newbie with pictures to assist an old man. I, at least got it at a great price.
It looks at least cameo to me if not deep cameo. Since it is in an old green holder I wonder if PCGS changed their grading criteria since then.
Even if they did - don't know either way - it's a tough call from the provided images. CAM & DCAM coins need to exhibit the same level of frost over all lettering, numbers and devices, and there are areas (at least in these images) which look questionable like the bottom of the reverse and lower left of the obverse.
Anyone of you need a picture at a different angle ? I have other Roosevelt's , one a 1971-S DCAM that says so but this one, to me, is confusing.
I think he's looking at the small lettering on the obverse and wondering if all of it is heavily frosted (a requirement for the deep cameo designation)
In about 1990, Rick Tomaska was working with PCGS on a new proof cameo designation to go along with Sheldon Grading. He submitted his proposal of cameo and deep cameo photos to PCGS, and soon after, the new standards were adopted by both PCGS and NGC. Prior to these new standards, there were no cameo designations at all, and a couple of years before that, there were no grading services at all to my knowledge. ANACS was the first grading service with the soap bar holders in the late 1980s, I beleive.
Thanks for the info. My guess was that at the time this coin was graded there was no cameo designations. If this coin was resubmitted it would probably be given a new designation. However, it's value isn't worth the cost of regrading.
10-4...It looks fine to me, average cameo, worth just as much as a new holder would be worth, but I like your holder better anyway.
Great information everyone. I'm not going to resubmit the coin. These older holders are unique I have a 1937 Mercury and 1924 Peace and the same style holder. I just like the way the coin is suspended inside. I guess that is the right word.
