Picked this up on fleabay and it looks pretty cherry. It's hard to tell with the toning, but the fields look immaculate and prooflike. What do you guys think?
OH yes. Love the toning. Solid MS 65 or maybe even a plus. NICE COIN!!! Prooflike? Hard to tell with the toning on the obverse. Reverse has some nice cameo.
Too many scratches for a 65 but I'd go a solid 64. I love how there is no toning in the bottom half of the first 8. That small area is as bright as the reverse and full of luster.
Thanks Dave, I'm not great at judging good toning, but this one just looked pleasant. The reverse really pops.
This one is hard to photograph, the toning is almost too dark. But it is really hard to find a scratch on it. There's a couple of small dings and light scratches on the cheek but the fields are glassy. I really hope it does better than 64.
I'm at 64 on it. I like it but it's not a wow to me personally. Tuff to tell if it would make PL but it certainly looks possible. Nice score if you got it around $220
I wish I had a proper photo setup, but I see what you mean. The only way I could cut through the toning is a pic with the lights running through it:
I probably overpaid , but I guess I'll find out if the grade it gets will cover its cost. Ebay is an endless drone of 63s and 64s and when there is anything interesting someone bids it to oblivion. But I took a chance on this one.
@blu62vette is the GSA PL/DMPL king so if he drops in maybe he can give you his 2 cents. As for grade that cheek scratch is in the prime focal area. This limits it to 64. If you want a small shot at 65 NGC is the way to go. Its nice but that scratch really kills anything above 64. And fyi, the diagonal lines you are seeing are roller lines that weren't totally obliterated during the strike
He finds some great coins! So do you. And yes, I know what the lines are , which is interesting because it's an otherwise full strike.
Nice GSA Dollar!! These are my favorite of the whole Morgan Dollar Series. I'd say it's a shot at 65 through NGC. Downside to submitting these to NGC is they have to be submitted separately from other coins, so unless you have 5 or more GSA Dollars to submit you're stuck submitting through regular or higher.
This is one of those rare cases, where the toning would be better suited on the reverse imo We wouldn't be debating how clean this coin is #1, a tpgs would be more lenient with the PL designation #2 and since the toning is just sorta meh - I'd rather not see it 'til I flipped it over anyway I'll say MS65 - with ye olde 1/2 pt bump No PL (but could change mind w better Images)nice specimen
Wonder how I missed this the first time. VAM-6, and an early one; the plate coin at VAMworld shows die cracks on both faces yours lacks. Seems appropriately graded to me.
