I would go cheap and send it to ANACS (or ICG?). Authentication would be the priority for me and not whose slab it's in. The date and MM look a little funky but looking at the other 1920s values it doesn't seem to make financial sense to do an altered date plus added MM on another date, but maybe. A 1927-S in XF40 is $475 and the 1923-S is $1100. The style of the 2 seems to have changed between those two dates though.
If he's already shipping a package, I figured it doesn't hurt to throw in a few extras at $10 a coin for grading. Return shipping won't go up until you hit 10 coins.
ANACS attends a lot of mid-sized shows and accepts submissions, plus the nice reps help you fill out the forms. https://anacs.com/shows/ ICG's shows are mostly in/around Florida.
Anacs or ICG are the better bet. The issue with PCGS or NGC (or CACG) is that the error coins would have to be sent on a different tier to get the error designation. The minimum fee for errors at PCGS is $35 per coin (plus shipping & handling).
I would go with ICG as well, with the CoinTalk special. With this coin, the main question is "is it authentic", followed closely by "is it damaged". ICG is at least as trustworthy on those judgements as the "Big 2". And $10 plus shipping sure beats, what, $100 by the time you get done with memberships/tiers/whatever at the others?
Regardless of where Meow sends it if at all, Meow would still like have other coins to send too. Meow cant think of anything coin wise in the Cat Hoard to send. However at this very moment Meow is going through this cats extensive comic book collection to send for grading maybe next week. Just trying to keep idle paws busy.
Meow has sent two previous small batches of comics to grade. And has had someone send some sports cards to grade for Meow several times. Results are aways mixed. Guess if they all came back top grade every single time, Meow would own Meows own tuna boat to have sushi every day. Its just more for fun, Meow is not all that interested in the financial aspects of collecting. Meows coin collection is quite pedestrian compared to Meows other collectables in the Cat Hoard. That reminds Meow of an extremely sentimental moment in collecting. Its not about a coin but Meow will make a new thread about it just to share.
It depends on the house cat Meow! Sometimes you find the adventure... Sometimes the adventure finds you: And sometimes, the innocent bystander gets run over... Or decides to leave dodge all on her own:
