Weekly Anicent Coin Giveaway #4

This is pretty legitimate.

It sounds similar to people who say they don't give money to homeless people because they might-or-probably-will spend it on booze. I haven't given any coins to strangers (though I am signed up for our Saturnalia), but I do give money to homeless folks, sometimes, even though they might spend it on booze, because it makes me feel connected to my fellow man. Which, yes, that's a pretty selfish reason for doing that sort of thing, but I could see coin-gifting filling the same hole in someone's coin heart. You can't let the potential for sneaks and cheats ruin the certainty of good feelings and community (says the man who hasn't given any coins to anyone on this board)!

I've been OK with with parting with my coins. One of the main reasons I tend be is to get something better in return or break even.

Recently I parted with my Nero Denarius, it was nice, I liked it, but I have too many Nero coins, so it was traded off to an even better Nero type that David A. has already seen.

As for my "ugly stepchild" coins, they usually get sold at or a few $ below my cost, but most of the time I tend to just trade. I also part with ones I am bored with.

Not too long ago I chucked all my Faustina Sr/Jr/ Julia Domna piles I accumulated over the years for cheap and sold them off to a collector on the PCGS boards. Made about $483 profit after what I got into them, not counting what I did have into them already. So I have been buying pieces I normally never thought I would never own.

But I admit I don't just give coins away, especially to people who are not into ancients or don't have much interest. I have the same issue as to what would happen...Ebay!

 

I have neveer done it with ancients but usually I trade my modern coins which I dont like, have too many of (I never felt bored of a coin, or maybe I am too young right now)

 

Maybe we could increase trading coins with one another? Trade coins you don't want for ones you do. That way you're only out shipping (I know this is going off subject a bit).

 

I'm in. I appreciate you taking the time and effort to do this. As a person just getting into ancients I would appreciate a little information on the coin. Name. date range, etc. I know I'm asking this of someone who is giving away the coin, but it would help those of us who don't know enough about ancients to have that information.

In an earlier thread Ken said one of his goals with this was to get people researching to ID the coins. If you want to give it a shot, www.wildwinds.com and Google image search are good places to start.

Congratulations on the win! Another good place to look is ebay. The coin you won is common enough, and if you spend some time looking through the ancients section, you'll see one like it, probably identified. There are fake coins (and a lot of the real deal) on ebay so I'd do some research before buying anything, but it's a good place to get exposed to a bunch of coins.

As far as I know, there were no strings attached to this coin givaway. I hope you are able to get what you need for Christmas @HonestScript

 

If it sells, it won't be due to the Byzantine. I'm having trouble imagining the collector who would buy a proof quarter and an AG follis wanting both. Maybe the buyer will get bit by the bug when he finds out it is 1000 years old.
