I have searched e-bay until my eyes crossed and all the silver Panama Balboa coins are so expensive. Can someone tell me why?
that is a vague question. which date coin are you talking about ? now if you are talking about the proof coins they are small in mintage numbers creating the supply and demand. for many collectors it has a very popular design.
This. They're a very popular design. I have never considered them particularly expensive, though? Were you looking at a top-grade example or a rare variety or date, or something? Then again, "expensive" is a pretty relative term. Some of the stuff I consider "expensive" costs less than some of my acquaintances would spend in a restaurant for a nice dinner.
Which type, one with the female on the reverse? I picked one up on ebay for $25 shipped earlier this year. Other silvers have been pretty cheap too.
I think it's probably having to do with budget. To me $25-30 is a lot of money. As a poor college student that's a weeks worth of groceries. So do I eat or get a new coin? Coins last longer
Yeah, who has to eat? Get the coin! LOL One man's "affordable" is another man's "expensive", for sure.
I know I'm going off subject now but that's what I love about this hobby. It fits everyone's price range. If you don't have a lot of money you can still buy awesome coins and enjoy the hobby. I'll pick up a coin from 300 BC and show my friends it, and then tell them I got it for $5. It just blows their minds.
It does have to do with my budget. I love coins and the designs these Panama Balboa designs bring. I should have posted some examples but thought maybe some of my numismatic brother's would have an answer if there was a general answer to my question. So it is like any other coin, it goes by mintage, date rarity and demand. Thanks all for the input.
save up for it. some coins you can make payments on. believe me I have made payments on coins before. I have also saved up for a coin too. you might be able trade for it at a local coin shop or coin show.
Yes, a US Mint product. Since Panamanian coinage was minted to US standards, silver balboas are a nice way to get modern equivalents to US dollars after 1935.
I put a set of those big 20 Balboas a while back and I still have it somewhere. Dansco even made an album for them although the weight is beating it up.
