It's coming from New York, not China so it must be real. Maybe Wiliam Barber went back in time and got Robert Scot to make this one of a kind coin. I cant wait for a future member of CT to ask if this is real after they have purchased it
Sometimes people just don't understand how great some people designs were. That coin was 100% real because Barbers designs were truly .. ahead of this time .. by about 100 years
It's still active. I've noticed over the last few weeks many similar 'Morgan Silver Dollar' listings on eBay. These caught my eye because most of the dates are pre-1878 and have a Trade Dollar design. EVERY coin that I've seen like this was: 1) Listed from a different new eBay acc't, with a 0 feedback score. 2) Listed in Canadian Dollars, with a (supposed) US address. 3) All have an identical description: 'Shipping needs: 7-35 working days. We can do wholesale. If there is more need, please contact me. Thank you.' When looking at one of these sellers' other items for sale (usually 5 or so), every other coin has the same scratchy, grainy look to it. Even the 'Morgan Dollars' that look like true Morgan Dollars and correspond to an accurate date have the same counterfeit look to them. Somebody in China is REALLY happy now, and getting happier (and richer) every day. Did I report this to eBay? No. I think anyone who has tried to report similar incidents will agree that it'd be a wasted effort.
One would think that if someone was going to try to peddle a fake coin, he'd at least get one with the correct date range.
EBay doesn't do enough to get rid of counterfeiters. All they care about is their commission. They are practically a fence, since they are providing the venue between counterfeiters and innocent victims. And profiting from the sale of counterfeit coins. EBay should be the defendant in a class action lawsuit about this very problem.
That's been discussed here a lot. I think the US Justice Department could investigate the company for knowingly providing an outlet for the sale of counterfeit goods in interstate commerce. But I'm not the attorney general.
I kinda agree with this but, If they did more I would miss out on some great contemporary counterfeits. Unfortunately, most people dont know the difference between counterfeits and fakes, and all would be reported and removed probably. Im watching this peice the op mentioned. If it stays low I may go for it to examine it, I kinda think it's neat. And also to save the embarassment for some unkowing buyer who posts it here in the future lol.
I don't think he'll ever ship. I bet he takes the money and runs. Tempting to bid on it but I'll see what happens.
I see your point. I know there are collectors who assemble contemporary counterfeits. But when I say eBay has a major league problem, it goes far beyond coins. I'm talking about watches, designer handbags -- the list goes on and on. And those fakes are cutting into the bottom line of legitimate major manufacturers and costing jobs.
This ridiculous thing is of so little danger to the health of this hobby, yet some appear ready with their pitchforks? The ONLY thing wrong with this listing is the seller's claim of "silver", meaning the ONLY problem is the seller and the manufacturer should in no way be held accountable (sound familiar?). The fact is it's simply a "fantasy piece" under the very definition so many on this board find perfectly acceptable even though this example is infinitely more obvious than those produced by other individuals, so lest we be hypocrites, there's absolutely no reason to believe anyone could be taken by such a thing. The moment it became generally acceptable for someone to copy coin designs and simply change the date or some other small detail, a dangerous precedent was set. We can keep making excuses for those we like while condemning those we don't, but we reap what we sow.
That is why knowledge is very important with these kind of stuff that is selling on ebay. Yes ebay don't care much about it as long as they get paid. I just wondering why our government don't get involve with all these fake stuff.
