Are the copper colored steel cents worth anything?

They are unusual but common. Here is an advertisement from Numismatic Notebook magazine in the 1960s. You send in your 1943 steel cent ( so they couldn't be said to be selling them ) for a collector's gag ( joke).

I just acquired a 1943 copper penny that I have the date to be unaltered. I have tested the penny with a magnet and it is not attracted to the magnet. The stamping looks exceptionally well on the coin. What else can I do to check the authenticity of the coin?

Posting clear photos of a reasonable size would probably be a good idea. The devil can often be in the details, which is the one thing we may best be able to help you with.

I have a 1943 copper coated penny . You can see the date clear . But it sticks to a magnet . Could this be worth anything

If it sticks to a magnet it's steel. If you say it's copper coated then it's coated! Worth 1C :yack:

I have a 1943 wheat penny with the d mint mark. I am not sure I should even attempt to have it looked at it have heard so much about fakes. I found several steel 43 and it passes the magnet test but probably not the fake test

If you can take and then post clear photos, perhaps the board can assist you. It's good that you understand it's likely not the real deal, but there's no harm in being sure.

If I recall correctly (some of you oldtimers can confirm this), one of the COINage magazine issues from 1974 had a large photo of the aluminum penny on its cover.
