Hey Folks, I've had this for a while but just now VAM'd it as I'm thinking of selling it to purchase a new Type Coin. Do I have the right VAM? Is that MD I'm seeing? And how much do you think it is worth? http://www.vamworld.com/1884-CC+VAM-7A Thanks for reading. ATES Die Crack Machine Doubling? Die gouge behind eye Doubling on 8 and 1? Die gouge or bag mark?
7A it is. It seems pretty available considering it's called the "rarest" 1884-CC; an attributed PCGS MS66+ sold earlier this month at grade price. The month prior, another 66+ in the GSA pack went for $300 more. The date features you mention are known for the VAM; I think the mint mark is MD. And that injury behind the mouth is why it's only a 62, unfortunately.
I don't know that it *can't* be. With that big a hole, one would think that we should see displaced metal. And what's that similar thing at the back of the cap? It's amost certainly damage, but there's room to talk based on size, configuration and the lack of evidence of "smeared" metal. While you're at it, think about this coin from an engineering standpoint. It has a displaced field in the die, yet no retained cud or even a rim-rim crack. Just_how_fascinating is that? What kind of forces does it take to bend hardened steel, when there's no place for the metal to move to? I believe displaced fields in dies are underrated. And you're not going to find any heavier doubling on a date in the Morgan series.
No chance of it being delamination? I'm trying to imagine what happened to the coin that it got such a mark. I'd have thought the gash would be uniformly deep, or at least not have that raised portion in the center left. Do you think it got two hits on the cheek?
