Hello, I found a 1990 quarter that is missing the IN & TR in the IN GOD WE TRUST. Would someone be able to tell me if this is a real error quarter or an altered one. I have not been able to find any info on this. Any help would be appreciated thanks in advance for your time and knowledge.
Hi Bill Fold.. welcome to CoinTalk That seems to be a Struck Through Grease/Debris error. It's a common and minor error. Debris gets into certain areas of the Die such as the numerals and lettering that is used to strike a Blank Planchet not allowing the design to be fully struck Thanks for sharing
Are you guys sure Mr. Bill Fold isn't just trying to pull someone's leg after all the crap I dumped on the forums today? Chris
Thanks for the information paddyman, I have been collecting coins since a kid mostly wheat pennies, fifty cent pieces and dollar pieces simply because they were different and seldom seen. I am new to the detail searching and looking aspect of collecting.
You are welcome.. here is a website to help you better understand the different kinds of errors. There are many! http://www.error-ref.com/
In that case, welcome to the neighborhood, Bill! A word of caution, though. Don't let @paddyman98 flip the coin. He's been known to cheat. Chris
By the way, also check for reverse die cracks at the left wing. The 1980's thru mid 90's were notorious for these. (Philadelphia) Adds a little spice when looking for errors.
I got a Washington quarter with the (in )not there but a (w god we trust) the W is well printed. thanks steve
