Entries are getting lower each week. Am I posting such crummy coins few want them? I didn't participate in Saturnalia as I figured I was giving out plenty. People, if you want a free ancient coin, keep entering. Well, I did from the start say I was giving out coins at random from a bag. Maybe I will mix it up and pick some specific things in the next few weeks....

They have been pretty interesting to me but if you want to "up the ante" don't let me stop you from giving away these really cool coins :)

This brings up a situation I believe we all face sooner or later. What are we to do with coins we no longer feel the need to keep for our personal enjoyment. Sell them, some will say, but that is not so easy unless your definition of 'sell' includes spending $10 to profit $5. Ken came up with the idea of giving them away which is a subset of selling for a 200% loss when you consider postage and packing. The fact remains that I, and I suspect many of us, have enough coins that I really don't want anymore and don't need another. I was considering trying a version of the giveaway idea but my bad attitude tells me that giving a coin to someone who just wants it because it is free is about as appealing as throwing it out (which is cheaper again due to postage). I'd be more inclined to give coins away if there were a way of separating those who will give our puppies and kittens a good home and not subject them to immediate remarketing on eBay.

What we each consider 'cool' really varies person to person and minute to minute. In 2016 I added 120+ coins to my collection and still like at least 100 of them. I sold some through John's auctions and finding someone to pay what I paid 25 years ago was not exactly automatic. What are we all to do with all these coins? The first step is to stop caring about them so we can send them off to a kill shelter. I'm having a trouble with that step.

Dougs comments have great merit. It is clear to me that in many cases people are joining this contest just because something is free and could care less what the prize is. I suppose in this case it doesnt matter, somewhere along the line the coins will be appreciated by someone, somewhere, at some time. Its why I give the coins away. Maybe not everyone will find that connection to history and our past, but some will (and that is the point). Most likely I should not have started this by giving away an extremely rare coin (it went to someone who really doesnt know what it is, though he may at some point). Anyway, I have always given away coins. I will keep doing so, as long as I have them to give.
