Just won this on eBay. I have her pegged as an S-101, which is rated as an R5- variety. I'm thinking a conservative G-06. Edit: I think she is S-103, or the LIHERTY variety with the reverse of 1794. What thinketh thou?
I agree it's in the Good range, either a strong 04 or a weak 06. The sharpness of very good is there in some areas, but the wear is uneven - some devices are nearly gone.
Nice coin. 1796 DBCs are relatively scarce, and that one has a nice appearance. Have not verified the variety but seems to be all there. I would need to look at the surfaces closer but a strong G4 possibly G5 is reasonable The planchets were often concave on these so you would expect the rim to wear faster. BTW, it is worth more than what you paid for it.

I posted just a bit ago with this same dilemma, but with a less attractive piece. The Best indicator on one with roughness at B/H (really a 170 degrees rotated B) is the the upright of the B pointing directly at the dentil on the S-101 and between dentils on the S-103. But the S-103 is still a nice R4+ pickup. Grading is entirely dependent on who is grading. EAC/PCGS/NGC/Others grade from tougher to more liberal with grading. That's before any deductions for condition challenges.
That is an excellent starting point for NGC grading based on wear. Now the more difficult part is determining how much difference there is in the condition or provenance, if any. The comparison coin is particularly stronger at the attribution points and weaker around the rim. That may make a difference and may not. I just noticed a coin I was looking at which anyone could have purchased for $180 in two previous postings just sold for $197 after starting with no minimum and becoming part of a bidding war. Value is very subjective. I just hope the coin itself is appreciated for more than what it might bring. But if everyone thought like that, there would be no place to get them. So good luck with your pursuits whatever that may be.

Too bad about the scratches - they do detract. However, I still think you did well on this one. It is a nice cent all in all, and fairly scarce. Try to keep her if you can.

Certainly not. You want to flip it and I want to keep it. But we're both looking for the same bargains. I just want to buy wholesale rather than resale. Sometimes I do and other times I don't. Good luck. (except when we're competing.)
