Got a few coins purchased today: A Satin Coin for the Kennedy Set. 25c "Arrows, No Motto" Type for the Type Set. Nice and crusty. Going to send it off to CAC. A *possible* addition to the Type Set.
Uploading photos is really a great feature here. Now taking good ones and posting them here is a completely different matter! I suck at the latter. Ask anyone here.
hard to tell but this is a proof.. so said the ebid ad. because the seller is a dealer type and a low price i purchased it. then went to see what MS70 has to say. now a 40 dollar coin is now worth 50 or not as it may not grade due the eagles skinned his knees, nice scrapes there and hard to see let alone photo and yes a proof strike for sure.
I've only got one of this type 50 cent piece and it's in so bad shape I'd be embarrassed to post it. Very nice coin!
Nope. It was so bad I cue tipped MS70 on it and when that didn't worked, I dipped it. It was BAD to begin with, the coin was so bad it was black and hard to even identify. Didn't turn out any better afterwards. I'll never do that again, it was a learning experience.
The latest addition to the Capped Bust Half Dime Die Marriage collection. This is the 1830 LM-2 die marriage. It's only a Rarity 3 - 201 to 500 known - but in the three years I've been collecting these, this is the first I've seen offered for sale. There are several others in this series that likewise seem to be more elusive than the official rarity rating. The 1998 Logan-McCloskey reference book on this series says: "Examples of this die marriage are difficult to obtain above VF." Doesn't look like things have changed in the intervening 26 years. I would normally not have bought this coin at this grade except for its elusive nature. Plus, I guess this coin would qualify as "crusty" or maybe even "extremely crusty", a characteristic that I normally find unattractive. So this coin will be coded in the set database as potential for upgrade. Finally, this coin was won in a Heritage auction. Normally, I follow and bid live but in this case I input a proxy bid at the highest I was willing to go a few days before the auction and then ignored it. It hammered at $30 less than my maximum bid.
I enjoy write-ups like these that helps explain the thought process a collector has for buying a certain coin. There are so many different ways that we collect coins, were all chasing our own version of an ideal collection , and often I see pictures of a coin and don't know what goal of the collector has in mind. It makes it much more interesting to for me to know the goals and the likes and dislikes of the person. I always learn something and it's nice to have a little story to go with the eye candy photo. I also have several note fields in my coin database for coins that are either prettier than the photo suggests or uglier than the photo, or has a pet peeve problem of mine and that I want to upgrade or sell it at some point. Glad to hear I'm not the only one keeping track of this in the spreadsheet / software.
I've got an AU53 in that marriage which I acquired in May of 2020. I haven't found a nice upgrade for that one in over four years. But my notes on my 53 have you earmarked as a potentially interested buyer if/when I sell. I will say: I like crunchy original coins like that quite a bit! I did acquire the LM plate coin for that marriage recently, but as it's a details coin, it doesn't supplant my 53 set piece. https://www.cacgrading.com/cert/290585556
Yes, I like your 53 more than my 45. I've already worn your hand-me-downs for a number of coins and wouldn't mind doing so again under the right circumstances. In the meantime, if a nice AU-58 to MS-64 of this DM shows up, we might just have to compete for it.
That's a nice one Millard. What's your guess, AU 55 or 58? That year and mint is a little bit tough in nice condition.
Thanks Barney. I expect delivery today so I'll have a better idea once I have it in hand. I bid on it hoping to squeek out a MS, but the rim bothers me a bit. I have a few slabbed Morgans that are MS62 and this looks just as good in the photos. Fingers crossed. But I'd be happy with a 58.
Hopefully the rim is just bag marked, shouldn't kill the grade. Just looks like a small bit of wear on the eagle's breast. (could just be a poor strike like a lot of New Orleans mint) The obverse looks really sharp without wear or marks other than the rim. I'd own it in a heartbeat.
