Recently picked up a few Morgan CC's in the OGP. Should I submit this Morgan 1881-CC for third party grading? Edit: The blue dot on the obv left of LIBERTY is from the lighting. Not on the coin.
Well, it's already entombed. You crack it out of that case and it loses a whole lot of value. It's a nice coin, for sure. Based on those pictures, I'd put it in the maybe 63 range, which puts it probably in the $500 to $700 range. If you want to sell it soon, I'd probably say submit. If you intend to keep it long term, I don't see a real reason to spend the money.
Many of these are graded in these holders. If you submit them to NGC they may still do it. They just wrap a label with a grade around the bottom of this case. I have one and keep it in the original box. I know PCGS has a special label signifying the coin came from a GSA holder if you want to lose the case. There's a lot of marks on the cheeks, that will keep these in the lower MS62 to 63 range I believe. Reverse looks to be MS64 to 65 quality. I'm guessing this one would be a 63.
You don't have the lose the case. PCGS puts these into an oversized slab. https://www.pcgs.com/news/pcgs-encapsulates-gsa-hoard-silver-dollar
As far as the coin goes, it is a somewhat better date (meaning not 82-CC, 83-CC, or 84-CC) so it would make sense to have it graded if the intention is to sell. But if you have someone willing to pay MS 63 money (or 63 money minus the grading fee) for the coin raw, then don't submit.
I love the GSA Morgans. My granddad knew I was a totally coin addicted kid in love with his worn slick V-nickels and such... Yeah, I was a poor kid... Granddad bought me these back when the government auction was going on and they were the highlight of my life for many years to come.
Great looking coins but I don't really think the price on resale will change that much if they're graded or not, I wouldn't take the chance. The only way I would have them graded is if the coins have been broken out of their GSA slabs.
Not sure if I would or not but if you do please make sure the TPG will keep it in the OGP when they grade it. It’s worth more in the OGP than just slabbed.
Randy, keep her right there. She’s right on the cusp of 63/64. I wouldn’t let her out of my sight just for a grade, even if they didn’t crack her out. Put a note on her she’s MS64 and don’t get any less than MS64 money for her if somebody chances to sell her. She’s more lustrous than she’s scuffed up. Grading is not a mathematical calculation pursuant to a half-assed formula, it’s a weighting of pluses and minuses. Were she all mine, there’s my thinking, this is one hot girl.
