I just got this 1922 D Peace yesterday and was doing my normal Dark Side Vamming. Running thru the listed VAM's struggling to identify the correct VAM..cause there's not really a whole lot to do outside in IA in Nov. I'll try not to give you the Moby Dick version, but I have a set routine I go thru, one of them being, looking over the rim for collar clashing. (I didn't stick to my routine on this one) Gave up for the evening and went to bed. Got up about 4 am and had a some extra time before I got ready for work, so I had another look........This is what I missed......Question, is this considered a Railed Rim? On the Left OBV it (the Rail) starts from just above the I in LIB and goes down to the about the 1st 2 in the date. On the RV the rail along with reed impressions start about the A in STATES, and continue down to the E in PEACE. The reed impressions fade in and out along the way. I'm at work and have been trying to get more info on the subject but don't have the time, and I thought (said) to myself, "Self, I bet those awesome, incredibly talented peeps out there in that CoinTalk thingy would know! More better pics can be supplied once I get home......oh, Happy Thanksgiving!
Happy Thanksgiving to you, too, @JAY-AR ! First, the correct term is "railroad rim", but I'm not sure if that is what appears on your coin. Can you give us a photo of the edge for the area in question? Chris
Chris, here's the rev, I'll get some OBV pics in a few...I took these at work so I only have a few, I'll shoot a couple more of the rv as well if you think I need more...OBV pics are coming....
I hope it will help to mention that railroad rims are identified from the rim, not the edge of the faces.
Great info Dave! I'm not well versed on this subject, but I knew you guys would be...I'll check the rim
Naw, ain't a RR, sorry I blew up. But, it's a pretty awesome collar clash that isn't listed. I believe this is a VAM 2AC with one heck of a collar clash. What do you think gents? I'll post the pics on VAMworld and see if LVA wants a look.
Still fairly new at this....after seeing this post, I googled railroad rim. I saw a lot of different pictures. I saw a lot of different examples of different rim errors claiming "railroad rim." Only one certified as the forementioned error but it didn't show the rim. So I'm asking you guys... Do any of you have a picture or a link to a genuine "railroad rim" error? Id like to know what this is.
I posted one. A "Railroad Rim" is caused by a partial collar strike, where the collar is not in complete contact with the planchet. As a result, the rim of the coin is imperfectly formed - part of it is reeded (if so designed), and part of it "leaks out" over the missing collar. The rim thus formed looks like a railroad car wheel, giving the name.
Yes, Googling "railroad rim" does produce a lot of images. Unfortunately, a lot of those images are posted by sellers on FleaBay who wouldn't know a railroad rim if a train ran over them. The image posted by @SuperDave is an accurate depiction of what a railroad rim should look like, and he has provided a good explanation of how it occurs. Chris
Dave, do the impressions on the rev look like reed impressions to you from a collar clash? Here's another pic
I apologize because i did not see that image when i asked my question. I see it now, but swear I didnt initially. Thank you very much.
Not particularly. Best thing I can do is link you to VAMworld's collar clash page: http://www.vamworld.com/Collar+Clash There are examples represented for both Morgan and Peace Dollars, and after it you won't miss a collar clash again. That makes a lot more sense. I've had missing image moments here, too.
Thanks Rick and Dave, I actually have several Peace $'s with collar clash reed impressions in the VAM attribution description. Here's a good example of one of the VAMs I own with a collar clash and why this coin appeared similar. Similar to yours Rick. The reed impressions on mine just look deeper and more plentiful. http://www.vamworld.com/1923-P+VAM-1BU The double raised rim on the OBV is why I questions it being a Railroad Rim, but now I have been educated on what a real railroad rim truly is....again, you guys always provide with great info I do have this posted on VAMworld as well to get as much info as possible. Thanks again everyone! Happy Thanksgiving!
