Got this 1946-S Roosevelt from a guy for cheap. It came like this and I verified it is the same dime as was certified before. He did not tell me what happened to the holder it was in before. So how can I slab it again, is it worth it or just keep this the way it is. Thanks for your input.
Once it's cracked out, it's raw. So it would cost the normal amount. There is also no guarantee it would grade the same.
Grading fees at PCGS using Economy is $20. Unless you have more to submit you would save money if you found someone else submitting that you could piggyback with. Other fees include a $10 handling fee per submission and a return shipping fee of at least $21.95. Your 1946-S Roosie wouldn't be worth sending in alone. With piggybacking you could share the non grading fees.
Assuming you paid the figure written on the label (which is about the right price for this coin if it were still in it's slab), the cost to resubmit would be more than the coin is actually worth (as robec explained). These are incredibly common - NGC lists 400 graded in 66FT, I'm guessing PCGS has significantly more graded. It would be cheaper and easier to just find another one already in a slab, if that's what you want. If you want to put it in the Registry, just use the number on that label, no real need to resubmit.
Have you bothered to check completed eBay listings? If not, I most respectfully suggest you do so....
I actually paid much less the guy was looking for quick cash, I made the offer, he accepted, it was an excellent pick-up on my part.
That's great, but not the point. It seems pretty clear that you could easily buy one already slabbed for less than it will cost you, even as a piggyback, to slab this one, and you won't be rolling the dice.
For $6...you'd probably be at a break even if you resubmitted it and it graded the same. That's a risk in my eyes because it could grade lower and you'd lose. I guess it's up to you...do you want a slabbed example or would you prefer it raw. If you want a slabbed example I would buy a slabbed example and sell this coin. If you want a raw one leave it as is.
That's great, but I'm not saying nor was I implying it was a bad deal. The point was, if you checked completed listings, you'll see the great majority have all gone under $20, with a low of $7.50 shipped although most have been in the $15 give/take range. Again, this has nothing to do with your purchase price, but only how resubmitting it would most certainly bury you on the purchase. It's a fine coin as-is and should be enjoyed as such.
No I do understand. That is why I wanted opinions of "to slab or not to slab". It's a nice Roosevelt.
