I just bought a supposedly ancient coin from a coin shop. He said he did not have time to identify it but wants $50. He sold it to me for $25. First clue I think is it as an 'SC' at the bottom of one of the sides. Since I do not know if it is the reverse or obverse, I'll call it side 1. There is an image a man ( facing left)sitting on a chair with 2 ribbons or something coming from the back of the chair. The right hand holds a circle, Written is G or C O I V C O "N N which looks like upside down U's" I A A V o 'O or G' On side 2 The is an image facing right. Written is M A R C I A O T A C I L G V G R A A ? G' As usual I can not get a picture of it. Any help would be appreciated!
Honestly we can't give you much of anything of substance without a picture. Surely using a camera phone, or a scanner or a borrowed camera there is some way you can get a picture of both sides.
Well, I'll be the first to admit I can't tell from what you've provided. As @red_spork said, even a simple image of front and back will help. I'll take a shot in the dark that it is Otacilia. Perhaps something like this?
As Bing said - the legend is similar to Otacilia Severa - Wife of Philip I. Note : The side with the Bust is the 'Obverse' and by elimination, the other side is the 'Reverse'.
No S C Steve? May be RIC 203? (Which I think is Bing's choice?) With a description of: Otacilia Severa Æ As. Obv: MARCIA OTACIL SEVERA AVG, diademed draped bust right Rev: CONCORDIA AVGG, Concordia seated left, holding patera & double cornucopiae. S C in ex,
Thank you very much!! I was totally lost. My hats off to al ancient coin collectors, it is a very complicated discipline! I think this is the coin I have. But mine seems to be rounder. I bought it at a coin shop and the owner said it was in a box that had a lot of old coins. I bought one hard times token from the box. I am hoping it is real and that I will be able to post pictures of my coin real soon. Thanks again King George, VA
More info. TC: Brass Sestertius of Otacilia Severa $22.72 Jul-20-01 Seller : tomcederlind OTACILIA SEVERA wife of Philip I. 244-249 AD. Brass Sestertius, 29mm (20.35 gm). . R: Concordia enthroned, l. cf. Sear 2636. VF in pleasing style.
I am still interested in seeing a photo when you can arrange that. There is no doubt about the ID but even in 2001 I am having trouble with Tom Cederlind selling a coin he would grade VF 'in pleasing style' for $22.72. I assume you are aware of the coin shows in Richmond, Fredericksburg and Annandale which are all decent for ancient coins. King George is a reasonable drive from all of those.
Wow, that's a horrible photo (was the coin moving when you snapped the shot?) ....... but the coin looks okay (looks like it has sweet eye-appeal) => I can't wait for better photos and to see the reverse!!
