I believe bulk purchasers have access to buy 10% of the overall mintage (7,500 medals) early, hence there are already slabbed PCGS examples, including those with privy marks. Check out the pop report below. I am screenshotting it to document this for future. Before it was released at noon, there were already hundreds slabbed (I looked yesterday). I was just going to guess that the privy-mark listings were people who hoped to get one, and would cancel the sale if they didn't. But if PCGS already has an extensive population... smells skunky, and makes me somewhat glad I gave this issue a pass.
Since 2021 the mint has had an agreement with several large authorized dealers to allow up to 10% of some products to be sold pre-sale to them but I believe they have to be picked up in person. I heard 175 of the privy marked ones were already sent out presale to these dealers. Somebody claimed that they knew of this.
Yeah not really rare when they'll all be 100% preserved except for the ones that are sent back and destroyed. The mint CS told me they do not resell anything shipped back to them. That they get destroyed. As far as value, a dealer may only offer you bullion value on them but I’ll guarantee no dealer will sell you one at bullion value. They’ll likely be around $80 to $100 until silver spot surpasses that. Graded ones will be higher. Similar to previous years medals. I don’t think they’ll drop to same price as a tarnished 1 oz bar from 1970 in the junk bin though some feel that’s what they should be at. In the end it’ll be another lesson in supply and demand. Anybody who bought from mint won’t sell one for less than the $100 I’d imagine less maybe a few desperate individuals. I wonder how many will be shipped back.
They might be telling you that, but I don't believe a word of it. 10 years ago, with the baseball commems, there was all of a sudden a re-emergence of availability weeks after they had all sold out. I ordered a few, knowing full well that these were discards for one reason or another, and my reasoning resounded. They were indeed substandard in regard to pristine condition but I didn't care, as I was going to turn them into pocket pieces.
I admit I was a bit skeptical of the absoluteness of that statement myself. They may even have different policies for different issues. Or the CS rep may not know the full extent of what they're doing either. Wouldn't shock me at all.
I don't recall "defective units returned to Mint and destroyed" being called out in any official mintage figures, for what that's worth. Cutting one's losses doesn't necessarily require desperation, though. You might only get 50% of your money back if you sell, but you get 0% back if you don't.
As I said in post #70, I didn't completely believe it myself. Are they required to call out what they end up destroying? I figured it was part of what was missing from the final numbers if they did. The final mintage of these flowing hairs will probably be 74,XXX something, it wont be 75 even. I have no idea how the official final number comes out in the end or if returns or destroyed product is subtracted out. Am curious now though.
I like the concept but was turned off by the images and the price so decided not to order as I also did not order the 2024 Morgan/Peace trinkets. Hoping the medal would look better I decided I just couldn't resist and ordered one midafternoon on the 15th. Got a confirm and email promising delivery on Monday.
Got mine today. Disappointed. It’s perfect….except for about a 6 mm streak of die polish in the field. Was so hoping it was on the plastic. I wish Pinehurst would have gotten this one. Eye instantly drawn to it so obvious there’s zero QC. Just kick everything out and box it up.
