XF range I think. If it's straight up oxidation I doubt acetone would do anything. I think that's mostly for non-metal-oxide residue
Not sure but I would use it just to be safe. If that green is PVC (and I believe it is), it will ruin the entire coin.
I'm afraid I haven't studied these enough to have a good sense of them. But I think XF Details, but nice RPD.
This is a contemporary counterfeit. I hope you know that. It is actually worth 2-3x a genuine coin in the same grade. As for the surface issues, you can try acetone as it won't hurt, but I think VerdiCare will help it more.
@TypeCoin971793, how do you tell that it's a contemporary counterfeit? I'm not doubting you, just curious...
i believe it has to do with the shape of the date numbers and the star outlines that are a bit more mushy than a real one. i think.
Yes Contemporary Counterfeit, made of German silver. The way the Shield and Star are engraved is a dead giveaway . This group of counterfeits were made pretty well as to fool the public in this era . The date is uneven and the lettering is oversized. This is a nice piece, I have one like it in my collection.
All kinds of dead giveaways, the most obvious being the drunken leaning of every detail. Fascinating coin. I'd own it proudly.
On genuine pieces the lines of the star outline are perfectly straight and meet properly. Also the star never extends into the lettering. Finally the reverse stars are even and equal on genuine pieces.
It's definitely a counterfeit an 1861 -TCS-3/D to be exact . Weight 0.68 grams ,comp silver. It's also quite rare one only two others known from my references . Compared to others this one is well struck. However a pup to it being a fake is the uneven date, lettering is oversized and some repunched . The central star is over sized and makes contact the lettering . The reverse shows several stars repunched , the 3 arrows within the large C show signs of repunch. There also a small notch on the NW curl of the "C" that's the spot on give away of it being a counterfeit piece.
Which reference, sir? I confess to not checking F&Z, which I should have done as soon as it was in hand, but ...
It's Kevin Flynn new reference on US silver three cent pieces . I'm sure you can find it on coinzip.com or Amazon . You could contact him and have him do the attribution .
they're contemporary counterfeits so it would have been probably no more than 10 years after the 3CS was discontinued
