Really nice photo Ken, I have the same wing shadow on the coin I picked up. I would not be able to take the same quality photo though. Good Job!

He was highly ethical. Now he is making counterfeit coins. It's just like what China has done to the hobby. Collect them if you like but they are no different. I collect counterfeits but I do so understanding what they are.
At this point Mr. Carr has given the guys in China a way around the laws that were put in place to protect all of us as collectors. There is nothing ethical about making money from finding ways around the laws and teaching others to do the same.

No offense, Larry, but that's not a very convincing argument. First of all, the Chinese don't have to care about our laws. They're not subject to them. Second, they're no less intelligent than we are; the only reason they don't do this in more sophisticated fashion is because they don't have to.

And who cares what laws are put into place to protect us collectors? Nobody enforces them, anyway. Ebay is in direct violation of HPA every day of the year, but we're too busy denigrating Carr's work to do anything about it.

This whole thing is a tempest in a teapot, and meanwhile the real problems go unaddressed. Y'all don't care about the hobby; you just want to argue. If you cared, you'd be fighting the real problems.

Yeah. I had a feeling all this HPA ammendment would do is somehow strengthen their arguments in their minds. Its bizarro world logic.

I've mostly enjoyed the 'civil' and enjoyable repartee. Points well taken on both sides of the fence. Well done fellows......:)

The difference is that firearms, cars, bars, and alcoholic beverages are legal to make and sell. Counterfeits are not.

 The Chinese have been making fantasy coins BEFORE any of us were born. They don't need anyone alive today to help them.

I should add that the quality of their best die work makes most of Mr. Carr's products look crude by comparison. :p

 :D Better tell that to the Chinese, Ebay, the folks I purchase them from, etc. Oh, and since this thread is about Carr's "new" dollar - :banghead::banghead::banghead:it's not a counterfeit!

I'm SURE he will not! A certain member has been writing about an article, a book, whatever. Hope he bites the bullet and starts a simple to do new thread about the REAL PROBLEMS. I'm not holding my breath.

EDIT: Not posted yet. I'm leaving work and will check again later.

There are going to be several of you eating crow when his pieces are adjudicated as violations of the Hobby Protection Act and you are out of your money. Under 15 U.S.C. 2101(b), "the sale in commerce of any imitation numismatic item which is not plainly and permanently marked “copy”, is unlawful and is an unfair or deceptive act or practice in commerce under the Federal Trade Commission Act." Enjoy!

physics-fan3.14 You got any more of them.... prooflikes?

I look forward to the day when this is actually brought to court and adjudicated. If we are proved correct, then that will be a win for the hobby.

If we are proved wrong, I will admit that I also was wrong. I do not anticipate this happening.

    Maybe. Maybe not.

    Maybe. Maybe not.

I think your new pics got lost in the rest of the thread. It would be great if you started a new thread and posted pics of a non-counterfeit, and then we could discuss good pics of a good coin.

As it is, the second set of pics you posted are much improved over your original pictures. I really like your new reverse pics, I think you balanced the lights much better and achieved a good light distribution over the coin. I think your obverse picture is better than the original, in that there aren't any significant dark spots now. There are still some overlit spots, especially on the high points. I'm especially looking at the area around the first star, her jawbone, forehead, and area above her forehead. I think if you play around with the lights a little bit more, you can reduce this. I don't use the same type of lights you do (I use halogen), so I can't offer specific advice on these. I think when you get the third light, if you dial the ISO back ( I personally use ISO 200), you will be able to balance the light a bit better (the exposure may have to come back some as well based on the third light, I usually use somewhere in the 1/400 range).

There is a lot of trial and error in this of course, and you have to figure out the right settings for your camera, your lights, and the coin/token/counterfeit you are photographing on that day. There are also some style considerations - what sort of look are you going for, and what do you like to see in your pictures. To me, your second set of pictures are a definite improvement, and I look forward to seeing where you can go from here.
