Here’s a 1849 Large Cent with an error. An incomplete planchet with a small curved clip. Actually it has 2 of them. Not a rare date as over 4 million were minted. The second clip is barely there but it shows on both sides of the coin easily.

Back in the day, a man would've lost his job for this. Now? They just let it go.
Question for you Large cent guys/ gals? How were the Planchets cut back then? o_O

About the same Sal. They still use a sharp piece of metal machinery to cut the planchets. Lol

Here's another question... While metal detecting, I've sometimes seen cut coins that were "dug". Do you think they were error coins or cut by the owner of the coin/s??

Man that’s too difficult to say without seeing a coin as it could be either. Take the coin and lay it flat and put another point exactly the same type next to it and see if it fills the missing piece. If it fits perfectly it was probably a error. If not chances are it was man-made.

PS. The point I posted in the thread it’s not the only older coin I have that has a clip from an incomplete planchet. I have other examples. I also have other types of errors in older coins.
