Almost no mint luster = VF (old school grading :hilarious::hilarious::hilarious::hilarious:).

Don't be sorry! That's a good one. :hilarious::hilarious::hilarious: Wish the shadow could tell us as this type of scratch is very uncommon.

XF40 scratch brings it down from xf-45

If there was luster, EF-45. But a technical EF-40. Scratch probably brings it down a bit.

Wait.... did Doug just Guess the Grade????? He once swore he'd NEVER do such a thing!

That's funny considering he was a very active participant in my GTG series at least for the first 400 of them. Never AGAIN, maybe.

Perhaps it was a "senior moment." How old is Doug anyway?

Ch VF... and there's absolutely nothing wrong with "old school grading", particularly when for one's own collection.

That said, the scratch bothers me more in the first photo more than the second, but perhaps it's just the lighting. As long as it's not fresh...

OK, its getting late over here so I will let you know how NGC graded it.

But first, many thanks for all your responses:
your opinions ranged from VF30 to EF45, with an average (If I had to guess) of around VF35-EF40.

    NGC graded this EF45.

Some of you hit upon the scratch on the reverse. In hand it is really minor and not at all obtrusive, or the first thing that catches your attention. It is also very small compared to the diameter of the coin. It is not offensive (but I own the coin so I have to say that, right?) Not at all, I wanted your opinions, So thanks all very much.

Lastly, I have just checked a number of these on Heritage to see how my example compares. Check this one out, Graded PCGS EF, CAC. There is an amount of chatter in the fields, so it appears that even CAC allows for some field disturbance at this grade level.

All in all I am happy with mine at VF35. (I paid around VG9 money for it so I have plenty of margin on the downside).

There are some really, really nice US coins scattered about Europe, and not much collector pressure to buy them. Eduard is not the first European collector whom I've seen acquiring excellent examples at prices which would be preposterous in the US.

    Like this one. :)

Uhh no, he never did any such thing. As a matter of fact I think you be hard pressed to find anybody on this forum who has expressed his opinion regarding the grade of a coin as many times as I have.

That said, no I do not do it anywhere near as often as I used to, on the forum anyway. But people all over the world send me emails asking for my opinion on the grade of a coin - every day. And they have done this for many, many, years. I have helped a great many collectors assemble very nice collections. And will continue to do so until the day I die.

I'd say NGC graded it EF-40. I think it has the EF details but that scratch on the back is damage to me. I honestly think it shouldn't grade.

Jeepers Wally, that,s a really neat coin...the scratch only shows up when Lumpy magnifies it!

Perhaps. Coins are also very hard to grade in a photograph. If I saw the coin in hand and I might change my opinion. But, based on the photos that's how I feel.
