Here’s 2 of my newest counter-stamped coins, both by the same merchant. G.G. Wilkins had a tight round stamp and while the coins are stamped he didn’t interfere with the main design of the coin. Both are by the same merchant but on different coins, a 1845 Large Cent and also on a 1857 Flying Eagle Cent. His name appears in a tight arch and he was a Doctor.
At least they're not the best of coins terms of condition. I like them also (counter-stamped coins). Here's one of mine.... LHB (Lucky Hobo Boy).
I know a few counterstamp collectors who collect by denomination and / or date. A good friend of mine has multiple examples of certain stamps he likes. Also, the scratches are generally not of great importance to collectors...the stamp itself is primary. Bruce
To me the scratches are acceptable as the counter-stamp has already ruined any collectible value. All that matters is the counter-stamp and it’s a nice one.
I kinda feel like this is a sub-thread that went off the rails. Someone scratched the initials "LHB" onto the 1857 cent. @charley wondered who that might have been.
The "where did you get this from?" part confused me I guess. It seemed like Collecting Nut didn't know why charley was asking about LHB.
