Lets say it IS a matte proof, could the slightly less strong characteristics of the die markers be attributed to having struck 800 previous proofs and the details are slightly more worn then earlier struck coins?

    Here's a PR-63 and there's no gouge ( UNUM )

The die scratches at the nose can also be seen on some of the non VDB 1909 matte proofs. The rest of the markers look close. I think this might be a winner but not 100% sure. Maybe Charmy will join in. @The Penny Lady®

Don't know what you're trying to say here but the gouge is there on that coin. Its just hiding under some toning.

I've never seen it Larry. This wouldn't be one of the major diagnostics of the VDB MPL if it appeared on anything but the proof version.

I take it back Larry. CoinFacts do show that 1909 MPL's without the VDB do have the scratches in front of the nose, but no crescent on the reverse.

Also the die scratch mentioned going from the back of Lincoln's coat towards Liberty is also present on both coins.

This coin Needs to be sent in for authentication. It has many things going in its favor, but there are still questions.

It does look like all of the obverse diagnostics appear on both 1909 and 1909 VDB proofs, but not circulation strikes. The reverse diagnostic only appears on the VDB Proof.

That makes sense. They must have used the obverse die for both runs but switched out the reverse for VDB & plain

I'm pretty confident you have the real deal here. @Rick Stachowski tried to tell me I didn't have a particular DDO Quarter not too long ago, even though every diagnostic matched up. I think he over-analyzes a lot. I'd take his bet every day of the week and 10 times on Sunday!!

Sorry im late to the party.... OH MY FREAKING GOSH!!

Congrats that is one of my dream coins. Ive been hoping to cherrypick one in circulated condition someday. I have a theory that some (more than you think) found their way into pocket change.

Very nice @Cascade. I see no reason not to roll the dice; the potential reward certainly dwarfs the downside.

I'd call it PF63RB. Someday, when I win Powerball or something, I will buy a really nice example of one of these. :)
