Does This Dime Look Weird?

    Hello,

I am looking through my old change and sorting everything out, when I ran across a dime that looks odd. It is a 1970 D, but the "0" seems very wide spread, and the "d" mint mark between the "7" and the "0" is almost touching the "0". The mint mark is much lower than it is on any of my other 1970 "D" Dimes. I have attached a picture of two dimes together. I don't know if they will come through as magnified, but it is very obvious when magnified.

Let me know what you think.

    Thanks,

It's normal. Just a different die. You can probably find several mintmark placements if you have enough to compare.

Mintmarks were punched into the dies by hand at that time, and can show different placements.

With 755 million D mint dimes made - there would have been multiple dies made with different variations of numbers and locations of the mintmarks - these dies were machined and not made by CNC milling machines as today's dies can be made to look exact to one another!!

That makes sense. I guess it is just a weird coincidence that all of my 1970D dimes look exactly the same except for this one. My own supply is very limited relative to the number of coins out there! :)

I can't even imagine what it must have been like to sit all day and punch mint marks onto coins. The next time my teenager tells me he is bored, I will tell him he has no idea what "bored" really is.

No. They were punched into the die.

Like ldhair said, it wasn't punched into individual coins but onto the dies used to make them. However, I think you've a fine idea (in regards to your teen), so we can keep that little tidbit just between us... ;)

Oh, and welcome to the forum!
