That’s the way I feel about Bust halves. But yeah, Buffaloes are cool, too. :)

"On 10c stock"?? I'm confused. A quarter is so much larger than a dime how can the obverse be so fully struck?

So stock is not the same as a planchet. A planchet is the prepared blank punched out from the stock sheet of metal. This quarter got struck on a quarter sized planchet punched out and prepared from a sheet of metal intended for dimes.

Great explanation! For those, like me, who were a bit slow catching on, the stock would be thinner, like a dime, but the punch would still be quarter-sized, like a (duh) quarter.

Is there any reverse detail on this coin at all? It seems like the dies would not be able to strike this very well if the planchet had so much less metal than it should have had.

Got it, thanks. It didn't occur to me that the mint could make such a dumb mistake.

I think you have to make 10 post or so to be able to create a new thread.

Go to the forum area you wish to post in.....coin chat, world coins, ancients etc. Click on that heading and to the upper right of the page there's a box labeled 'post new thread'. Simple as that. Welcome Bob.

Are you trying to post a reply in a thread that is in the Buy/Sell/Trade forum? If so, you can't. Those are 'read only' threads.

Here’s the reverse. It is definitely missing some details. The coin also “pings” differently (I found it based on the sound it made). Note: I’m against “ping tests” for diagnostics for coins.

Haha, they have made all kids of mistakes over the years. This certainly isn’t the worst of their mistakes. And, some of the “mistakes” have been on purpose.

Yup, just a new one for me. I'll mentally bookmark it under "put the wrong giant 1500' roll of planchet material into the blanking press." Cool coin to find in the wild.
