I'm wanting to see your Caracalla & or Geta. I've recently picked up a couple of Caracalla AR Denaris recently from an auction on Forvm. I also picked up a Geta a couple of weeks ago from JA. I'd love to see what you all have of these brothers. I'm looking to add more to my collection. The Geta I've already posted once before so I'll hold off a bit on it. Here is one of the Caracallas I picked up. I got it for the reverse, its rough but not to bad. If its a Pax & within my remaining budget I'll most always grab it up. Caracalla AR denarius 19mm, 2.6g, Rome 215AD ANTONINVS PIV AVG GERM; Laureate head right. PM TR P XVIII COSIIII P P; Pax standing left, holding olive branch and scepter RSC 314, RIC 268, SEAR RCV II, 6841 Post your Caracalla & Geta. While were at it might as well show off your Pax as well.
Atta-boy, Smojo!! ... congrats on scoring that cool Caracalla well, okay ... Young Caracalla Older Caracalla Poor lil' Geta
Caracalla has so many fantastic coins-- not sure why I don't have more of his! This denarius was from a large mixed lot. It's nice enough, although not a particularly exciting reverse, someone standing there holding giant shish kebabs: Caracalla, 198-217 AD Rome, struck 215 AD AR denarius, 19 mm, 3.8 gm Obv: ANTONINVS PIVS AVG GERM, laureate head right (looks like GURM instead of GERM) Rev: PM TRP XVIII COS IIII PP; Fides standing left holding two standards Ref: RIC 266, RSC 315, BMC 143 Here's a provincial with an interesting reverse: Asklepios holding snake on a stick while flying on a winged snake: THRACE, Pautalia. Caracalla CE 198-217 AE29, 16.4 gm Obv: AYT K M AY CEY ANTΩNEINOC; Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right Rev: OYΛΠIAC ΠAYTAΛIAC; Asklepios, holding a caduceus, seated on back of winged serpent flying right Ref: Varbanov 5007
I will get around to taking a new pic of this, it really is much nicer in hand. Caracalla Coin: Silver Denarius ANTONINVS PIVS AVG GERM - Laur. bust rt. I need a serious upgrade on my photography skills. I'll address that around the first of the year after the holidays. When it comes to my pics they always look better in hand.
I am just getting around to photographing the last of the stuff that has been hanging around for the last couple of years. I am finding a good few coins that will end up on ebay. I am learning to photograph (trying) to follow Doug's advice and using the manual functions on the DSLR. I have a long way to go, but I am slowly improving. Once I have finished the stragglers, I will be reviewing all the earlier photos. A never ending job.
Caracalla? I may have one or two.... Or three if you count the reverse wedding scene of Caracalla and Plautilla on this coin.
Cool posts all!! Here's a provincial example of Caracalla from Moesia Inferior with the Zeus reverse:
As Caesar with sacrificial implements Young Augustus with Sal Gen Hvm (Savior of the human race) 4 Assaria of Tomis as Caesar with Dioscuri lounging Young Augustus AE29 Amisos with tree and wall 5 assaria of Marcianopolis with mother Domna - Tyche reverse reversed from the usual right and with denomination E also reversed but rest of legend normal AE38 of Stratonicaea with wife Plautilla - Zeus reverse 5 assaria of Marcianopolis with brother Geta - Cybele reverse - Being shown with Geta could not have pleased Caracalla.
These are all really nice, cool to see whats all out there. Surfing through the web & auctions lets you see only so much. I snagged this one. Its broke missing a small part but still a keeper in my book. I don't think anyone has posted one of these yet. PROFECTIO AVG, meaning "our glorious emperor is setting forth from the city... thank the gods!"
