I don't have a good reference book for these and google mostly pulls up brass. Can anybody point me in the right direction for more comprehensive information? Sorry the pics aren't great.
I'm having a hard time reading the legends on both sides. If you can print them for me, I'll look for it in my Mitchiner book. Chris By the way, what is the diameter?
The reverse reads 'Mourn Him and Avenge Him' The obverse carries the name of the Kings, and I believe, the name of the maker of this medal. Sorry I can't help any further.
The text on the obverse may be freely translated as "Louis XVI, king of france, killed by conspirators". On the bottom on the reverse is the date that Louis XVI was guillotined. So this will be a royalist remembrance medal.
As an addition; Shortly after the French revolution it would not have been wise to mint such medal in France. So this was either from a later period, or more likely, made in England. Please look at this link: http://www.coinpeople.com/index.php/topic/33074-louis-xvi-medal-by-mossop/
Thanks guys, but I need the legends in French so that I can cross-reference them in the index of the Mitchiner book. The index does not alphabetize the English translations. Chris
It looks like the OP's medal is signed F.L. (for Friedrich Loos) which would make this an original produced in 1794 according to my Forrer reference. Chris
Actually had to run home anyway. Obverse: LOUIS XVI ROI DE FR. IMMOLE PAR LES FACTIEUX Under the bust are initials F.L. Reverse: PLEURES DE VENGES LE! At the bottom: LE XXI IANVIER MDCCXCIII It appears to be a proof. Thanks Jim
Jim, I've made a very thorough search of Jetons, Medalets and Tokens: The Low Countries and France, Volume Two by Michael Mitchiner, and there is no listing for this medal. I can only assume that it might not be a jeton. Jetons are known to be smaller than 38mm. What is the diameter of your medal? Chris
Thanks! I guess I'll just have to go back through the Indexes (first) and the 800+ pages again. Chris
Since you gave me the name Loos, I was able to find more info. This is from Goldbergs 2006 Pre-Long Beach sale.
