Rarest coin

Held a 1796 Half Cent (mintage ~1300) in MS 64 at coin show pretty recently. Also held a 1793 Chain AU 58. Pretty sure those are the most valuable coins I've held.

A low grade 1794 Dollar (mintage ~1700) is probably the most sought after. Maybe the half cent.

My error. half eagles. I believe the half eagles were the only coins minted at these 2 mints.

Mine was an 1895 Morgan in PF-something.
It was so long ago that I've forgotten the particulars except that it was at one of the Baltimore Whitman shows.

 

The coin pictured is one of a kind, no holes are exactly the same.

Lets - held is easy 1796 half dollar and 1836 Goldbrecht dollar. All of this courtesy of my local coin shop. They really enjoy sharing the really rare stuff they get it - one of the reasons I like them so much.

Actually, both QEs and HEs were minted at Charlotte in 1838 & 1839.

For US coins, probably an 1874 half eagle. Only about 100-125 known. Not all that rare in the grand scheme of things, but for US coins I guess 100 known is rare (for some ancient and medieval coins, 100 known is considered downright common)

For non-US coins, my rarest is a British medieval Anglo-Saxon coin of Aethelwald Moll. As far as I am aware, only 5 coins known of this monarch (equal rarity to 1913 liberty nickel, haha). Of the 5 total examples of this king, 4 were discovered by metal detectorists in the last two decades. Mine is the exception, and has a provenance dating back to the 1840's.

Although I have no photographic proof of it, I got to hold a pikes peak $20 gold piece that walked into the shop. Amazing to hold the coin! Was given to the old lady's father when he retired from a bank back in the day. We had it certified by NGC for her to authenticate it but mostly to keep it safe. SHE was really going back and forth on keeping or selling, but decided to keep it afterall. I belive it came back xf40 or 45, but unfortunately it's been about 9 years and my memory has gone fuzzy.

 

For me the rarest coin I have held in my insane hands would have to be the Lydian silver coin ,was going to buy it but needed to pay bills , but I found another... A more modern coin a few 1783 Fugio's ,in ms ,60,61,62,63,64. , As well as a few other early American colonialist coinage as far as coinage from the 1800s get a half disme, trade Dollar ,two cents,,trimes, twenty cents 1900s : trade Dollar, 1909 s vdb own 2 of them 1955 doubled die own 2 of them... And the list goes on

Well for me, the "rarest" coin would probably be my 1942/1 D Mercury Dime in MS-65+ FB...I think there are only about 20 in that grade or higher across both services. As far as a mintage rarest coin probably my 1894 Proof barber quarter, with a mintage of 972.

 

Which reminds me, you really need to drop that one in the "under $50" thread.
