I have probably a dozen of them pulled from circulation in the 70s. I don't know what I'm ever going to do with them. A 1971-S brown box I think was my first ever coin purchase. They're fun because they're so big.
I have a passion for really nice business strikes, but they are few and far between, and some have become quite expensive.
I get mine from the bank and leave them as tips. I love looking at the confused faces of the wait people as they try and figure out what it is. The younger the person the more confused the look.
Yes I do. When all my school age peers were doing all the popular kid activities, I was plundering coins. And my fever was pitched when Ike’s came out. They will never be esteemed pieces because they are clad, but they will always be cool to me.
When they first came out, I gave one to my friend as a birthday present. It was the coolest thing back then. Here is my 1972s T1, T2, and T3.
Have to do an album of these eventually. I even figured out what I want to put in the 3 empty holes at the end of the Dansco (the one without the proofs): 1990 Eisenhower Centennial Dollar 1991-1995 WW2 Dollar (Has a quote by Eisenhower on the reverse) 2013 5-star generals Dollar (Ike is on that too) On my desk is a bank I got from the Eisenhower museum in Abilene, KS, based on the Eisenhower dollar.
ikegroup.info I have 223 from the 1971 - 1978 range, 12 from his 1990 centennial. 3 of the WW2 anniversary, and only 1 so far of the 5 star generals. He's on several international issues too, but have yet to see any at the local shows I go to. I like Ike.
I still have the order confirmation card that arrived a while before the coin. I thought I had a picture of my Ike stash but I guess not. Here's one I picked up from a now-defunct LCS in Laramie.
My father had around 700 that he pulled from circulation over a number of years. I came across someone who was willing to pay a small premium for the bulk lot so he figured it was time to start moving some of his bulk coins to make some room. Room for what I didn't know. I added about 140 to his and shipped them to someone back east. I have a few random cellephane mint packs with Ikes as well as a few proof sets with Ikes, BUT only the sealed blue Ikes, brown Ikes and silver packed Ikes I hold on to these days. There has been some interest in the 40% Ikes at the coin club auction lately so I've been selling off a few a month. A couple full sets is really plenty.
Does the postcard add any value?? I've had a couple with random people's names on them but just sent them on to the new owner.
I doubt it, maybe a little "cool" factor. You can still buy these for not much over the original $10 price. Not a great "investment" but I still enjoy having one.
I'll add a $1 to the next one I try and sell for the cool factor I've been getting $15-$18 depending on what year brown Ikes at the coin club auction. Can once in awhile replace them for $12 on eBay with free shipping.
I was but a wee tyke when Ikes circulated. I don't remember ever spending one or receiving one as a gift. Their size confused me. My parents had a padded white box in their closet that contained a few Ikes, and some other monetary items. Until I collected coins later in life, that was the extent of my interactions with Ikes. I have one of the silver 1971 Ikes. Those are pretty nice. Also fairly easy to obtain, but dealers always seem to want to sell me the "blue" Ikes still in their rather large boxes. No box, please, just the coin. Ikes, like just about every other 20th - 21st century dollar coins, were doomed to failure as long as dollar bills circulated. That remains the case to this day.
The Red Book (2022 75th Edition) lists 35 types of Ikes. 24 non-proof and 11 prrof coins. Here's a list of them and the sources from which I obtained the coins in my collection (which I think is basically how the mint issued them). Please provide any corrections. After all I am just a stupid dog. Here are the 24 non-proofs.
I love these things. Alas, it's essentially impossible to assemble a complete set now: "Eisenhower Dollars with Major Varieties, Circulation Strikes and Proof (1971-1978)" as the "1976-No S Type 2 PR" has a population one one. A pop of one is a Major Variety? WTF PCGS...
