I argue/learn about "everything" coins all day at work. What you and others consider an argument, I consider a learning experience and a discussion. Tell you what. I respect a few here (such as yourself). I don't wish to rock the boat. You ancient guys have a "little private world here" so... in the interest of peace; I'll continue to lurk and keep any comments as simple as: "This is bunk." Then why don't the labs use distilled. The deionized water system a the lab I visited uses FOUR different tanks to make it.
I can't speak on behalf of others, cordial or not but I personally would welcome the facts that remove any doubt about the statements you have made in regard to this topic. I'll give you a little nudge along the corrosion route. What facts can you provide that categorically show that what you can see on the uncleaned coin is responsible for what you can see on the cleaned coin ?

It appears that "he" has gone that route, although he says "they" will not have him and he does not wish to work in a conservation lab. I can personally relate to that. Sometimes the best people and the best results take too much time for an employer who just wished to "get by." And some don't like to conform to bosses or rules about what constitutes "conservation."
Possibly because distillation systems are expensive (DI setups aren't cheap either) and require attention and upkeep that DI systems don't. As to the 4 tanks, I don't know, most of the systems I have seen have one or two "processing" units or perhaps you could call them tanks that run directly off the city water lines. Upkeep in these systems requires changing the processors/tanks.
THIS PARAGRAPH IS NOT DIRECTED AT YOU and I applaud your curiosity and question. I question EVERYTHING myself. This is a perfect example of what I hate about forums. It gets really old posting over-and-over about things that should be obvious. Example: We have a thread on the US forum. A photo is posted with a request: "what is it." The next poster got the correct answer. The same answer was given in three out of five of the next posts. Then, I explained in detail what to look for, how to determine what it was, and why the photo was confusing everyone. They are still trying to figure out the "truth" several pages later. I even tagged a nationally known error authority to help out but he is rarely found on CT. Corrosion pits have been sited on the finished coin already. IMO, anyone contemplating collecting ancients should know more about corrosion, what it looks like, its effects, and how to control it. I'll guarantee if I had that coin in hand (with the photo of the original) I could prove it is corroded with magnified images AND possibly convince any doubters about the silvering (one way or the other) by examining the corrosion pits themselves. This optical examination should take less than two minutes. If this were a legal case, a few hundred dollars could detect cyanide or other chemicals that may still be present that were used to restore it. I have only one advantage over most of you. I have been studying the surfaces of coins (including ancients) from 5X to 40X (120X in some cases) for a long time. Sometimes I think I must recognize characteristics in the images a little quicker than most. BOTTOM LINE: The coin came out great and I praised the "coin doc." No one but me cares what and how he "saved" it. That's OK with me. Again, thanks for you interest! As one member said...If I cannot talk about them then I must enjoy seeing my writing about coins.

I work for the nuclear navy. We make DI water where I work. It's a lot more complicated than just that.

The Mediterranean Sea and Atlantic Ocean is connected (you all knew that). One body is more salty. The water mixes back and forth ON TWO LEVELS one in and one out. I think the salty level is on the top. The subs would go up to the strait, turn off their engines and let the current take them either into the Med or out depending on the depth they were at! COOL! Yeah, they were straight up lying to you. That is not how things work. I can't tell you how they do work because it is classified.... But they were telling you tall tales.

Nope, never had the honor of joining any service. I am a contractor for a company who's only customer is the navy.
