There is some interest from the sample slab collecting community but value tends to be on the low side. Slabs that actually say SAMPLE tend to be more desirable. These advertising slabs are giveaways that can be gotten from the TPG's by just about anyone. I would think the value would be in the $5 or less range.
Thanks so much Conder! I actually put it out there on eBay for $15.99 or best offer, so I'll see what get. I kinda thought the error of the slab stating it's a D MM and it's really a P would make it a little more interesting. Anywho, again thank you guys and Gals for all the great info!
The Compliments of CameoCC slab is listed on page 433 of Sample Slabs, second edition as type PCGS-005-4-1. I gave it a value in the catalog of $35 based on the only comparable in the my eBay research, which was a sale for that amount on 11/4/13. Although the one sale was for $35, in an auction it would probably go for less and I guess at a result of $15. Still, there are many PCGS specialists who would like to have a variety that hasn't been seen for a while, and you might get a better result. I am often way off on values, especially where data is sparse. Although it appears similar to the very common 2005 Bison nickels, this is actually a scarce variety. A wrong mintmark might add to the value, but so many sample and related slabs have mislabeled mintmarks that it makes only a small difference. I am helping myself to the photos. Let me know if that is not OK.
David, thanks so much for the awesome info! And of course you can use the photo's. So, currently I have it up for sale on eBay, if it doesn't sell, I could ethically re-list it as a "PCGS Sample Slab" correct?
You can edit the listing to add the Schwager#: PCGS Sample slab - Schwager Catalog PCGS-005-4-1 Or - since there are no bids - you could pull it down and relist... with that info in the title for better visibility. You could also do catalog value $35 OBO...
Might try having it CAC'd. I sent an old Franklin like that to CAC and they gave it a yellow sticker.
Thanks guys! Burton, I think I'll do just that, I have 2 peeps watching, think that'll make any diff if I pull and re-list?
Just pulled it....going to re-list tonight using the info you guys provided..... Again, you guys are awesome!
Yes, it's a sample slab. As a promotional slab (one that advertises a business other than the grading service) it falls under the general umbrella of sample slabs. In the same way, luncheon slabs, show slabs, young numismatist slabs, and similar are all generally called samples. Good luck with the sale, and thank you for the images.
Thanks David, I re-listed the slab, I'll let you know what it sells for if that will help with your data collection. Is there a link to your catalog? You've peaked my interest!
David, Burton, sold the Sample slab for $43 on eBay. Thanks for all the great info and the great education on this subject......
Top Row Here is a 1881-S grading set of rattlers MS-60 thru MS-66 with 62PL, 63PL,and 64PL spent 10 years to find them all. also listed in the PCGS Registry set under grading sets. Bottom row Is just 10 1881-S in serial number order that I was able to find. --------------------- would like to find a MS-67 rattler, I have seen one but I did not have the cash. No DMPL 1881-S in a rattler that I have seen, other dates are in DMPL.
