A cold and rainy day, not much to do, so I thought I'd show today's auction win... Pamphylia, Aspendos AR Stater (drachm ?). Circa 410-375 BC. Mopsos riding left on horseback, spear held in his upraised right hand / Boar to right. Olçay-Mørkholm, "The Coin Hoard from Podalia", in NC 1971, pl. 9, 493. 5.43g, 19mm, 3h. Off center, missing most of the reverse legend, somewhat worn,... but I really like the style of the obv. which is usually not that good imo Feel free to show your boars, or if you won something in the latest Roma auction
Mopsos? Cilicia, Mopsos. AE20, 7.8g, 12h; 2nd century BC Obv.: Laureate head of Zeus right. Rev.: MOΨEATΩN; Lighted circular altar on tripod base with lion's legs, M − Π flanking.
Very cool coin! Who is the depicted Mopsos and how do we know that's who it is? I'm unfamiliar with the coin and would love some background. Most of mine have wings Here's my current Pigasus collection. Most are from Klazomenai; the rest are from Kisthene, Mytilene, Samos, and Rhodos (Ialysos). I picked up a very pretty Lucilla denarius, posted today in another thread. The more I look at it, the more I love it
I was just reading the article cited in the description (Olçay-Mørkholm, "The Coin Hoard from Podalia", in NC 1971). Here's an extract... The "siglos no. 491" is of this type... https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=3359669 That is indeed one of the best portait of Lucilla I've seen A lovely coin overall !
That is an impossible question to answer. Maybe I could deal with it broken down into my favorite electrum Pigasus, favorite small bronze Klazomenai, favorite larger bronze Klazomenai, favorite Klazomenai diobol, favorite Klazomenai drachm, favorite Samos pigasus... Nah. Still too hard.
The gold one is spectacular, I wouldn't be able to point to a favorite until I had read up on all of them. I have been looking for a pigasus for ages, without success.
Hmmm? ... a bit coin-creepy, but sure => Batman is every citizen's saviour!! ... oh but hey, please be awesome to him (he's my favourite)

Super posts everyone!! Hey, I only have one measly boar and lost out on a pigasus again!....but there's that RR Geta denarius that so many of us have: But I did win one of three entries in the Roma auction; AR Antoninianus of Maximianus Herculius struck at the Lyon mint, with the Hercules reverse----if only the reverse was as super cool as the obverse. The life-like portrait just wouldn't allow me to pass on it....and that neat radiate helmet.....
