I have what I believe is an 1861 Confederate Cent. I'm not quite sure if it is one of the originals or just one of the first few bashlow restrikes before the dies broke. I would like to know: 1. If it is indeed that coin and not a copy 2. If true, which version is it? restrike, original, etc. 3. What's the best way to go about selling it? Should I get it graded (if so, by whom)? Just stick it on eBay? Use a real auction service like Heritage Auctions? 4. Of course, What's it Worth?
Sorry but your coin is neither an original Confederate Cent nor a Bashlow restrike. There are numerous differences between the genuine articles and your coin. The numerals in the date are different. Liberty's cap is different. The '1' in '1 CENT' on the reverse is a different shape. The wreath is different. Your coin has no value. It is a copy. Others here will tell you the same thing. You can believe us or you can argue with us and insist that your coin is worth $100,000 or more. Your choice. BTW, welcome to CoinTalk.
Try staking it on top of another modern penny if its smaller it might be real! Im no specalist though. If its real id say it might be worth up to 150,000!
Ha, son of a *****. I feel dumb now. I thought I had looked at it pretty closely, and it didn't have the copy markings like all the copies I had seen do, so I hoped it was real. Oh well, there goes that new pistol I was wishing for. Hobo, thanks for your help in squashing my spirit with your pointed critique of my carelessness, but dammit I almost wish I had never asked. Seriously, though, thanks for helping.
Hobo is correct, there are many of these, most issued as souvenirs for re-enactment events and various centennials, etc. Here are a token similar to yours, except reverse has 1/100 rather than 1 cent. The other two are from the defaced dies ( transferred ). I might mentioned how the bottom curl of hair is different in our tokens from the original/defaced. welcome to the forum! Jim
Sorry to have been so blunt but we have had a bunch of people here lately who ask for our opinions and then refuse to accept our opinions and proceed to argue that we are wrong and their coin is some rarity worth a fortune. Keep looking. You never know.
Hobo's a real specialist you just have to ask he the right questions or give him good pics i.e. coinoligist! im just interested in error coins.
mark, that is a Bashlow Restrike that was struck in 1961. These were struck using transfer dies made from the original defaced dies.
Bashlow Restrike Thanks Hobo. Figured as much. You never know until you ask. Thanks for the quick reply!
I have a old Peace pipe that has a 1861 Confederate coin attached to the end--it appears to be stamped on a copper blank, its thin and the size of a modern nickle?--any thoughts? Thanks!
No, it is not an original. It actually doesn't appear to be one of the restrikes, it looks like a cast copy of a restrike.
Yep, looks like the COPY stamp is still on the reverse, just smashed I'm talking about the one posted by amanda shaw.
Hey peeps. I have a confederate 1 cent that I found in my great uncle's coin collection set. Can someone tell me if this is real? Not sure what I'm looking for but would be nice to know what to look for. Thanks.
A guy on Craigslist in my area has been trying to sell a pair of the Bashlows for almost a year. One is brass and one is goldine. He is asking $375 for the pair.
