Why do I read that as sarcasm?

As an American, the challenge of collecting Aes Grave is the import restrictions adopted by the U.S state department via a Memorandum of Understanding with Italy in place since 2011. Basically, we are prohibited from importing Aes Grave (or any pre-denarius bronze of Italian type) without provenance prior to 2011. I won't even consider an Aes Grave without an early provenance. So, my new coin fit the bill nicely - not only is the provenance prior to 2011, it is also prior to 1970 which is a key date in the UNESCO convention. Pre-1970 provenance means most museums could accept it as a donation (how thrilling). I'm hoping I can find an even earlier provenance for it in my old auction catalogues.

 

This member has me on "Ignore" because I'm a who has very strong opinions. So perhaps one of you can convey this thought:

I know, I know, people with "class" are not to be concerned with the price of things...it is strictly taboo. However, we all know that the first thing out of a the mouth of a non-numismatist is "How much is it worth." That's what good people do and it is normal.

Since all of you are great friends and like to discuss coins that you have/want/just purchased; and since you all have different incomes and are not the jealous types (?) - This is what I should like to see on the ancient forum: In addition to all the details of Ruler, size etc, it would be great to see the prices that you have paid (IF YOU WISH TO SAY)for "normal" condition coins most of us can afford rather than the prices in our auction cats. It should be very educational and I for one will not consider it in poor taste or bragging.

PS Although I can no longer afford the quality I purchased decades ago, you all have renewed my interest and I think am going to start buying ancients again.

 

@Insider : Being cordial to one another does not make us great friends, it makes us friendly. I'm relatively new here and I've never met most of the other board members. I'm certainly concerned about the price I pay for my coins, as I dont have an unlimited budget. However, I was tought at an early age that it's rude to ask others what they paid for their stuff. Ancient coin prices can easily be discerned from other sites such as acsearch and Coin Archives. There's no need to get into prices here. Having said all that, I'm glad your interest is rekindled.

 

I appreciate your comments! I was taught the same thing. I never ask but I really appreciate it when my "friendly" acquaintances indulge my normal curiosity without me asking. Unfortunately, I find the prices we each actually pay for something can have no relation to published wholesale/retail prices. Otherwise, my cordially offered opinion is that all of you may be getting screwed.

BTW, "Friendly", "Great Friends", "Buds", etc. carries the same meaning to an uneducated such as myself. Again, IMO, it is all a matter of word usage.

I'll try to be more careful with the words I use such as "corrosion," "verdigris," and a "dusting of green powdery residue."

 

I consider it poor taste to ask what someone spent on a coin. I think it's that my parents told me never to ask people how much they get paid and it just sort of grew from there. I must admit I am often curious what someone paid but I won't ask.

Why do you think that we are all being taken?

 

This is why me posting the price I paid is meaningless. I may have overpaid, or I may have underpaid. How would you know the difference? The websites that I mentioned earlier are dedicated to this type of information and will provide a broad list of comparable sales from which you can draw your own conclusions of value. Those websites are better suited to that information. Radom discussions on Coin Talk of the price paid for one coin are pretty meaningless, as they are provided in a vacuum.

Dude, why don't you have more degrees? ... you need more degrees!! ... you obviously are missing all of our insider-jokes, because you don't have enough educational degrees (first thing I'd do if I was you, would be to unhook your underpants from that coat-hook and then go get yourself more degrees!!)

 

Obviously, there is no way of knowing so be happy and content.

The identical coin can have several prices. Dealer-to-dealer, Dealer-to-dealer he wishes to suck up to for something down the line. Dealer-to-dealer he despises Dealer-to-ignorant new collector. Dealer-to-best customer. On and on an on.

That being said (and understood?), we'll never know about it among cordial friends as none of us know the prices you paid.

 

AFAIK, only one member of CT has boasted to me that he has three degrees hanging on his wall. I don't think it was you.

Based on his posts, I could fit his entire knowledge about numismatics into a thimble.
