You articulate plenty of 'what if's' pertaining to never before seen on US soil land grabs on a massive scale. And please don't use the whole, every inch of the US was a land grab from the Indians, argument. That instance this great country of ours wasn't the United States yet. However, the 1933 FDR gold confiscation was 100% a reality of a gold grab. And I do believe that could happen again. And much sooner than a land grab.
I could author a book on the ramifications of buying land other than a "homestead". I've learned that you can only lease that commodity from government that is currently vastly employing relatively uneducated individuals to oversee its use. I started by partnering with an Attorney, as a teen, to purchase rural "first growth" properties within 50 miles of a major Metropolis! I bought hundreds of wooded acres along streams and rivers. That was a bankrupt experience, unless every property is owned by a separate owner (e.g. LLC). You need a means to protect from hunters that steal, point a shotgun at your head and say "we're going to hunt here, do you understand?" Law enforcement that state "you shouldn't be there alone". You meet government officials titled assessors, not having "comps", who state "I don't negotiate", increasing assessed value 35% stating "everyone does it!" Hopefully one won't experience "Eminent Domain" and "Adverse Possession", as I have! I recommend learning, before investing in land. JMHO
When the maternal side of my family left, they weren't even allowed to take that. The only thing they got was the clothes on their back and a $20 bill that my great grandmother concealed.
Your post above was valid, until your last highlighted sentence. We ABSOLUTELY just rent our properties from our uncle. Just a few supporting reasons why this is so: - Take out a mortgage on your home. Default on said mortgage. The bank forecloses on your home. The bank is the first recorded lien holder. Oh nay nay. The tax man miraculously jumps in front of the first mortgage holder to collect their 'rent'. - Want to build a deck, a foundation for a new shed, an extension on the house, a fence, a pool, etc. Can't do it without requesting permission from the building department (our uncle). Approval isn't even enough. Must pay a fee for the building permit. Inspections along the way. A final inspection for a certificate of occupancy. And finally a possible visit from our uncle in the name of the tax man to possibly reassess your taxes (rent) for the improvements you made to their property. - How about taking 'your' property from you outright in the name of progress/advancement and the good of the community by means of eminent domain. Oh don't worry, they'll pay you FMV. We can all share a collective laugh at that prospect. - How about the 'protection' of 3rd Amendment to the Constitution? No soldier can forcibly take residence of your home, in peacetime. All our landlord has to do is declare war or a national disaster, to commandeer your home for use by their boots on the ground soldiers. Don't think this is too far fetched anymore, considering the state of emergency we all experienced in 2020. That was likely just a test run. - How about selling your home? Not 100% sure about everywhere in every state, but here in New Yorkistan we pay a Real Estate Transfer (conveyance) Tax upon the sale of our home. - Commit a drug related felony and our uncle could potentially confiscate it.
Gold is nuts right now, but it doesn't have to stay that way. In 1980 gold hit $850 an ounce. By 1990, it was down to $400. It eventually got down to $280 in early 2000. Gold will probably never get below $1,000 again, but it doesn't have to stay at $2,500. And given inflation, the $1,000 price might be more like $500 in real, inflation adjusted dollars.
In MN having the wrong current plates on a vehicle qualifies as a "gross-misdemeanor" which can easily become a felony with auto-warrant capability for arrest. And the gross misdemeanor even after completing court ordered probation service?: How long does a misdemeanor stay on your record in Minnesota? Misdemeanors in Minnesota can be grouped into one of three categories: gross misdemeanor, misdemeanor, or petty misdemeanor. Regardless of the category, these crimes will stay on your record forever unless you apply for expungement. I don't need to "do drugs", to induce a felony!
1- I never mentioned 'doing drugs'. 2- I never mentioned anything about any felony. 3- I did say 'Commit a drug related felony and our uncle could potentially confiscate it.' 4- Your scenario of a VTL violation turning into a felony would not trigger the home confiscation that I was referencing. Your MN scenario, although a disgusting handling of justice, doesn't carry any poignant message for this conversation. But thank you for taking the time to present it.
I am a reasonable guy. Logic can persuade me, even when I am committed to my approach to life. On reflection, there is wisdom in the words of Mr. dcarr. I have not quite surrendered to the path of gold, but I do see the problem with not having a portable asset, so I think I have a way to use the land to implement a more fluid plan of protection of assets. So, I am going to start growing Tulips and corner the U.S. Market. I am going to harvest the seeds and conceal the seeds from the government and invading hordes. Thank you for your influential education Mr. carr.
A 170 I.Q. highest SAT scorer may see #3 = #1 + #2, not knowing if that would constitute the felony related action of #4 where you reside! I just related to the seeming similar circumstances questionly unknown in other states, of which I'm familiar. I do however, agree with your view of a disgusting handling of justice. I wish I'd seen your view that mine doesn't carry any poignant message for this conversation. But thank you for taking the time to present it. Respectfully, Rich
A word to the wise. Tulips grow much faster from bulbs than seeds. Skip the seeds (simple interest) and go straight to the bulbs (compounding interest). Your wealth will grow geometrically that way.
But, don't you see? THAT is how I am going to corner the Market! I am going to use Seeds. Portable, can't be traced by the governments and they won't know where I hide them, the invading Hordes won't be able to find them, and in the SHITF scenario, I can swallow them, and "produce" them later, without the need for more fertilizer. Try that with a couple of hundred bulbs.... I am no wood clog wearing Dutchman with a funny hat. If the Dutch had just given a little thought to it, they would have realized how stupid using bulbs were. I AM AN AMERICAN AND WORTH MY WEIGHT IN GOLD.
None were ever informed! I promised the tester who would lose her job for informing of the test purpose/results! None were informed of my 4.0 GPA either, which resulted in managers of a large firm coming to a 17Y.O. students' home, who had completed a mechan./electr. engineering design program, required high school courses. They immediately offered the position of lead designer for mechanical and electrical as I had studied, with transportation to and from, which was accepted for work on the next day. I haven't a need to be proud, as my awards/efforts provide "Self-Esteem" that speak for me, where I've declined director position to design/develop for >40 years. I had no idea why your seemingly contradictory statements were posted as being thee judge of fact. I/we are proud of your ability to stay atop water, as I was only a lengthy under-water/bottom swimmer searching/finding nature/valuables. Thanks for your perspective! Respectfully, Rich
Most of what you're saying is that there are consequences for not paying your taxes, not paying your mortgage, not paying your taxes and your mortgage, money laundering, drug dealing, etc; that there are building codes and costs associated with that; that property is an asset that somebody can come after for a host of reasons; and that selling your property also incurs many costs. Welcome to reality! None of this supports any contention that you don't own property, you just lease it from the big bad government. Even your point about eminent domain contradicts such a notion - if you're merely leasing your property from the big bad "uncle", they wouldn't pay you anything at all, they'd just cancel your "lease" and take it back. Since the topic is gold, private ownership of it was outlawed for 40 years, from 1934 until 1974. That's more likely to happen again than somebody taking your land (unless you're a criminal).
We had some friends who owned 3 acres in the middle of a big area that was being developed as a high-end shopping mall area. Although the developer and the city/county did not just come and take the land, the city/county essentially conspired with the developer to leave a narrow 1-foot wide "spite" strip of land that barred access to our friend's property. There was no other reason in the plat for that strip, other than to severely diminish the value of, and access to, our friend's property. The developer wanted to buy it cheap, and eventually they did because there was nothing our friends could do with the land other than sell it at a relatively cheap price to the developer. Regarding the 1933 gold confiscation ... The "Gold Standard" was massively cheated upon during the 1920s. That led to enormous gold obligations that weighed upon corporations, the Federal Reserve, and the US Treasury. They all were obligated to deliver gold on demand (or upon maturity of bonds), but they didn't have it. The solution was to negate all those gold obligations. In 1933 the US Treasury and Federal Reserve held only enough gold to cover about 10% of the gold-demand currency notes in circulation. Government obligations were in gold and those obligations couldn't be met. So the obligations were reneged and gold was confiscated. Today, government obligations are not gold, but rather "entitlements". There would be no reason to confiscate gold. If anything is going to be "confiscated" it is entitlements (pensions, Social Security, Medicare, etc.). The mechanism by which that has already been occurring is "inflation". The government can continue to print money at will to cover all obligations. But as they do that, the total cost (in dollars) of those entitlements continues to go up. At some point the entitlements will be curtailed and/or more taxes will be levied.
You're reading my posted explanation for the reasons we lease our land from Uncle Sam too literally. Understandably so because I was quite emphatic with my list. However, saying we lease our land is very much a metaphor for the massive reach into our pockets, and control of our personal land use. Hell, here in NY (can't speak to other states) if your property lies within a municipal water district, and you feel they are price gouging you for water use, even if you 'own' 100 acres, you can't drill your own well on your property. Just another government endorsed monopoly. In the United States, the only true land OWNERS are the Indian Reservations. They don't answer to the Federal Gov't. They aren't required to follow any of the land use/zoning laws we must follow. They don't pay property taxes on it. They police their own land. 100% on the same page here. My contention that we only lease our land from .gov is not saying that it is a worse investment than gold. I'll take land every day of the week over gold. We are totally in agreement. As a matter of fact, I posted the below quote in my post #61 in this thread.....
ATTICA! ATTICA! ATTICA! I think I better go back and refresh my understanding of Baruch and Isatai and Charlemagne. Thank you there, Mr. dcarr for the wonderful enlightenment. So, a Construct value is the basis of a Construct value, and the real basis of distribution of the Construct is the printing Press, which uses a product of trees-paper-to confirm distribution, and trees grow on land, so logic dictates the owner of Land with trees is the Keeper of Wealth. Now, these printing Presses have to be protected, because we don't want persons with evil intentions gaining control of the Presses, so we have to build strong buildings of stone and brick and steel to protect the Presses. All the materials to build these buildings is a product of Land, so logic dictates again that the owner of Land with rock and clay and iron is the KEEPER of Wealth. The basis of the value Construct that is not Land, is the substance identified as gold. Gold is a product of Land, so logic (sigh) again dictates the owner of Land containing gold is the Keeper of Wealth. Hmmmmm, maybe there is a reason the Chalice of Christ was constructed of wood. Time to also brush up on Sir Thomas again. But, thanks Mr. dcarr for your erudite education. Truly...
If you review your federal annual notification of the cost for parts A-D S.S., you may see that although the benefit is being taxed at poverty level, the benefit is being taxed and reduced before the additional tax is applied! I believe you'll find S.S. is cleverly being taken from tax payers who earn additional funds (e.g. savings accounts, pension, 401K....)!
