Hey guys! I found this 1961D Half Dollar that look to me like an RPM. However, when comparing it with Variety Vista and Wexler's listings, I don't see a match. Can someone give me an opinion as to what I have? Thanks in advance!
Hello. Certainly not an RPM. Looks like either a damaged Mintmark or Machine doubling. Remember how the mintmark was applied okay?
The mint mark looks flat and thicker on the left side while the right side is thin and lower than the left. To me that’s damaged and not an RPM. Since the coin is 63 years old and you can’t find anything that matches on Variety Vista or Wexler’s it it further proof of damage and not an RPM.
I'd be cautious with that statement... a few years ago I discovered a new DDR on a Franklin. Several more varieties of that type were discovered as a result of my initial find. I have also discovered a new RPM. These discoveries are possible. Even with incredibly old coins like the Capped Bust series, a couple of times a decade they announce a new discovery.
Clearly machine doubling, which is also seen in the lettering in UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and DOLLAR.
