I recently purchased a box of pennies at an estate sale and found this 1918-D that appears to be struck thru cloth or some other item at the mint. Any ideas?

physics-fan3.14 You got any more of them.... prooflikes?

I'm not sure what you have, but it does not look like a genuine cloth-struck coin. This is what it should look like:

It just looks like the "old" "Post mint Damage".

I think it is a retained lamination.

Here is a 1917 Improper alloy.

It has a loose and loss of Lamination between 3 and 7 on the reverse.
