I have a few graded coins and some of those are lightly scratched. My question: Is there a way to "erase these scratches" or is the damage done?
For light scratches you could try the headlight lens polishing compound or something similar. By similar, I mean you used to be able to buy a kit to fix scratches on CDs/DVDs which might work better, if you can still find it. But for heavy scratches?…fugitaboudit…imo…Spark
Hmm. Depends on who's headlights someone's been polishing it with. BTW: Our Dinosaur car is a 2011 with one light working.
Sal, I highly recommend the 3 step Novus cleaner/ scratch remover/polish. Here's a link to it: Novus 7136 Plastic Polish Kit - 2 oz. https://a.co/d/76ujd6T
I bought some stuff off eBay that works really well for even deep scratches, if and when I get upstairs…LOL
I've taken out light scratches, but if they are more like a gouge, you end up with a distortion that's almost as bad as the scratch.
A while back the oil change guy wiped my headlights with power steering fluid. I couldn't believe it actually worked. I can't vouch for it on coin slabs but someone adventurous might try it.
With that you'll never go off the rails like a crazy train! Power steering fluid, what will they think of next. LOL.
Yeah I'm having second thoughts about even hinting at recommending that. I never tried it myself so I shouldn't have said anything...
I have used toothpaste also. Scrub it around with a Q-tip wipe with wet tissue and buff with soft cloth.
Toothpaste, hmm. At least they will smell fresh, right? How about glass scratch stuff that they use on cars? Hmm. I'll have to experiment with a cheaper slab like the ones I have that are "Self slabbers".
Two things. Different slabs have different plastic make ups. Lens polish will make a PCGS slab look better than new but barely touches an NGC slab. Other thing is don’t let the stuff touch the hologram on the reverse. It will obliterate the hologram.
I have used the same for many years. It takes a few minutes per side. I just kick back and polish while watching TV. The same polish also works well to remove the gum that stickers leave behind. I like to polish slabs before imaging or sending them to auction. For the final polish I use the little cloths that are used to clean eye glasses.
Could you send me a link or tell me where you get that? The vast majority of my slabs are PCGS and the scratches on some of them drive me crazy.
