Moffat 1853 San Francisco 20 dollar real or fake

    Hello my grandmother showed me this coin she had and just wanted some verification on if it’s real or a fake

    Not real. It doesn't even look like gold. Check images of a real one and compare. I would imagine it was probably bought in a souvenir shop.

    I agree it is not real. Compared with real images, it looks cartoony in design and plated and it shows where the plating has worn thin to expose the underlying base metal.

    Probably a non-gold plated tin replica or facsimile of some sort…as said: a souvenir…imo…Spark

    David Moffat was a railroad engineer. He scaled the continental divide to build a railroad to the the west side of Denver, over the continental divide. I would like to hear a little more about how he made connections to Eagle, Grand Junction, and certainly include State Bridge Lodge on the Co. River.

    That was a different Moffat than the one behind the Moffat & Co coins. I don't know if John Moffat the coin guy and David Moffat the railroad guy were related.
