I'm weak... 1st one cracked... but I'm sticking with one a day 48.1g (yeah I picked the lightest 1st) Black Core... 1913 Type 1 Buff in 9.4 or MS64 About $90 coin... Still, I'm not unhappy even if I already have one in MS64 (toned as well)
This seems real gimmicky. These have that new NGC grading scale too... What's the significance of a purple core or black core?
Got it. I guess NGC will do custom labels and slabs for any company with the money to pay. I'm surprised this doesn't get shut down as an illegal lottery.
I guess that's a fair comparison, though trading card companies manufacture the rarity of a card, but collectors assign the value. These coins have an established value already. Seems more like a 50/50 raffle.
I will never in my life pay for anything sight unseen, period. Also, I thought NGC would have gotten rid of that 10 point system by now. I refuse to ever buy anything graded that way, or to pay to have anything graded that way. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
I guess this is their way to try to get these coins out to the collecting community. I don't much care if I ever own one.
Well I guess being the 7th release and all sell out in 3-4 hours I guess Im glad there's much hate on these! I'm not a fan of scratch lottery or the US Mint coins. So as my father always told me your pig pork it as you see fit. This one 5 mil in 3 hours love to see the crashes at the mint lol!
Impossible to know without knowing how much they actually paid for the coins. https://coinweek.com/box-breaks-for-coins-questions-answers-and-numbers-on-vaultbox-series-1/ has a spreadsheet from Series 1 of all the coins and NGC values. 800 boxes sold at $595 = $476000 net sales. The total NGC value in that spreadsheet is $578675, so you know they didn't sell them at a loss. If they paid 50% of NGC price, they earned $289338 (minus packaging costs etc). I'd guess Series 1 was probably less profitable as a teaser for the rest of the series, but who knows.
I'm sure they do sell well to a certain collector. Not for me though. I collect certain series and buying a grab bag isn't a way to fill the holes.
Which means squat in the Numismatic Market. Now, if the value was based on Wholesale Greysheet value, I may nod in favor of transparency.
You can download the spreadsheet from the article and fill in the Greysheet. Let us know what you come up with.
