I recently purchased a small but nice collection and in the box of foreign coins was this token. The obverse reads WARREN PACKARD WARREN, OHIO around the rim with the center reading HARDWARE AND IRON. The reverse has a shield in the center with 13 Stars and Stripes. Around the rim it reads W. & A. J. PACKARD from 9 to 3 o’clock. From 3 to 8 o’clock it reads YOUNGSTOWN, OHIO. From what I can gather this is a token issued during the early years of the 1860’s during the Civil War. Prices seem to start in the $75.00 range and go up to twice that. I’ve never seen this token before so any help would be appreciated.
They are called (among other things) "Civil War Token Storecards". I have one which I bought purely because the surname is my own. Here it is: Attribution from the seller from whom I purchased it cited 2 references: - American Journal of Numismatics, July 1869 ed., pg.24, “Copperheads”, #399. - Fuld, 3rd edition, NY-985-A-1a. I just now did a quick search on Google rand found these potentially helpful hits: https://www.executivecoin.com/category/1599/civil-war-store-cards https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Civil_War_token https://www.amazon.com/Guide-Civil-Store-Card-Tokens/dp/B000HEKXKG
You can have some fun with this one. The variety number is OH 910-aA-1a. The variety is listed with the unusual "aA" because it was added to the list of store cards after the Fulds wrote their book. It is fairly common and rated as an R-2. Warren Packard was born on June 1, 1828. He was a leading figure in the Warren, Ohio business scene. He took over the business from Thomas H. Morely. Warren Packard and his brother, Andrew J., open a second store in Youngstown, Ohio. He died on July 28, 1897. Warren Packard was the father of James and William Packard who founded the Packard Motor Company, which originated in Warren, Ohio. The piece you have is not overly valuable. The grade is in the Ch VF to EF area, and it not as nice as the one that was shown on eBay @ $49.50. From the one picture, that one appears to be a Brown Uncirculated piece.
Once upon a time there was a nickel and a dime. They fell in love and got married and soon after she became pregnant. Their first child born as a half dime.
