Just picked up a PCGS 30th ann.medal. Two funny things.#1, I, and others kept bidding on one from an American seller, while a seller from Hong Kong had one BUY NOW for a cheaper price, and,#2, PCGS didn't bother to grade them. Limited to 500 . Thoughts ? ( don't be cruel,)

Oops, ( auto complete.) Speaking of NGC, Should I send to it to them for authenticity, and grade ? They could band it like the GSA holders. Could be a VAM, so maybe send to ANACS ? By the way, I meant to write slabbed, not stabbed, ( for those who couldn't figure that out on their own. )

    John, welcome to the Forum.

It appears you've got some, um, mistaken notions.

You say, "PCGS didn't bother to grade them." Nope, it doesn't work like that.

PCGS is a third-party grader. They don't manufacture coins. And they don't get their coins direct from a Mint.

Instead, folks like you & me (and dealers) submit coins to PCGS and pay their fees. Then PCGS grades & slabs your coins and returns them to you. Like this:

So if a coin is ungraded, it's because no one submitted it to PCGS. It's definitely not because PCGS didn't bother with it.

You also say, "Limited to 500." Nope. Far from it.

The 30th Anniversary 2016 American Silver Eagle (ASE) Proof is produced by the U.S. Mint. From their website, sales for the 1st month (9/16 - 10/16) were 423,639.

These ungraded coins are available direct from the Mint for $53.95 (plus shipping): http://catalog.usmint.gov/american-...n-16EA.html?cgid=american-eagle-coins#start=1

So far, PCGS has graded 26,655. The majority (80%) graded 70: http://www.pcgscoinfacts.com/Coin/Detail/570523

And of course the ungraded coin is typically cheaper. There are no PCGS fees.

But it's crazy that some folks have actually paid over $500 on ebay for a PCGS-slab 2016 ASE Proof. (Hopefully you didn't.)

Why is that crazy? You can get the same coin all day long for $80 - $90 from lots of vendors. Like this: http://www.jmbullion.com/2016-proof-american-silver-eagle-pcgs-pr70-fs/

    Well, sonofagun.

I like the design they had chosen for the medal, thought it was well executed whoever manufactured it

    Those are nice medals.

It would be hilarious if somebody cracked one out and submitted it to NGC.

While on the subject, I got the 30 ann. SAE for $84.00, and the medal $ 127.00. Seen many going for much more.

There are several different versions of that medal/slab. The one Paul M posted is the most common one. I believe they were just sold by PCGS to anyone that wanted one. There was a limited edition of 500 that were given away to selected members. And there was a very limited edition in silver of I believe 28 that were given to the original PCGS Authorized dealers. There may also be a version signed by David Hall.

I don't think NGC slabs crass self-promotion pieces, only PCGS does.:D:D:D

Yes, and there is also one that says "PCGS Luncheon" on it that was given out at the PCGS luncheon at the ANA show. Probably fewer than 200 of these, but not sure exactly how many.
