Here's a fun game I came up with - count the silver. How many 90% and how many 40% are in this box? Should be able to zoom in pretty good. It's in a local auction, just list as half dollars, 1960-1976. I think my count is correct, but was wondering if there were other guesses. If I win it, I will post the answer in this thread. Fun, eh?
My eyes got dizzy so I'm probably far off but is the total 168 correct? Also 123 40% not 126.Im assuming those 5 halves not in the stack are the only non silvers.
True, sometimes they look like 90%, and sometimes they look CuNi. But for the most part you can see a dark grey core and silver clad and tell. Here's an old photo from my roll searching days (was a good day that day...) - the middle 10 or so are 40%.
When I used to bid on lots pictured like that, counting edges, I always assumed that a silver-looking edge was 40% and a clad-looking edge was non-40% clad. I wasn't often the high bidder, but I never overpaid. I've seen lots of clad coins with edges that looked like they might be 40%, and 40% coins with edges that looked like they might be pure silver. All the more so if they were photographed without a proper white balance.
