Happy Friday everyone. I finally got around to ordering some trays and printing off attributions for my growing collection of ancients. I knew my wife would be up late on Thursday watching the Labour Party victories being announced, so i thought I would keep her company and start filling in some coin trays. Obviously I'll need double the number of trays because I only put a coin in every second compartment (I'm not sure if the ink or paper could damage the coin over time if I put the coin directly on it?). This first lot is mostly second century emperors and spouses. It was strange to realize I have even more coins from the third century because I (like many I'm sure) was trying to pick up a silver for each emperor. Anyway - in my fit of excitement I thought I'd share my first tray here. I've included the tickets from where coins were bought at fairs or where the coin came with an older ticket. I'm tempted to build a nice coin box (Meat man inspired) as there are plenty of tools at my family's home in Ireland and I've enjoyed word work in the past. However, I'm quite busy at the moment and I have a friend who is a talented joiner who I might commission for a small project. Any thoughts, comments, or advice would be appreciated!
Terrific way to show your coins. I very much dislike slabs and some flips can damage your coins. This shows the beautifully.
Really nice collection and well documented. With ancients especially, documenting the coins and learning about what they depict is a big part of the fun. Cal
Many thanks for the encouragement folks! I like how it looks, though part of me is thinking about putting a coin in each compartment on top of the coin description/assignation. I agree with Blake Davis about the slabs - and I did notice a few years back that some coins seemed be affected by certain flips (one sestertius seemed to be blackening the flip which raised some questions for me). SorenCoins - yes I'm still second guessing how to best display them! I'll need to buy a few extra trays if I display them this way.
Thanks, Victor. I might try that out too and see how I feel about it. Very impressive lot of trays there, too.
Make sure you use archival paper and not acid free or normal paper. Chemicals and ph balance. An effect coin metal.
Yes, it is most of my collection. I also have several hundred more unofficial coins that I keep in a binder.
great display, The order by date is interesting. My RR silver coins are mostly in a safe deposit box in trays by date, -118 to -92 shown. I would like to store my cast bronze coins by date also, but the size difference means small and large denominations need different trays.
Thanks, rrdenarius. I've been admiring your republican coins. I've only recently started with republican denarii, so I don't have any base metal republican currency. I do have the same issue with displaying some sestertii in my collection. Most of them fit into the 30mm slot trays that I have, but some of the chunkier ones won't, so I have a tray with varying sizes for that. Thanks for sharing those images.
