Hi all! I found this state quarter (2001-D, New York) that I believe is an improperly annealed planchet! It has a very dark look and shows very reddish, copper color. It has the long straight lines (perhaps roller marks or roller lines) that some other modern quarter improperly annealed planchet errors have been known to show. It’s a bit tough to capture in the lighting, but here are the most representative photos: I have heard the rims are useful in identifying these (Im not exactly sure how, though), but here are some photos under various lighting: Let me know what you all think! Thanks
Here are some more photos. They are under harsh lighting and dont exactly reflect the reddish color well (because it’s really strong white light): Tried to get many angles—lol!
Weight is 5.70 grams according to my pocket scale. I think that is a normal weight for a clad quarter. The tones are black, reddish/coppery-black, and silvery gray. I'll send new photos in natural lighting.
The black is slightly more reddish than appears on the photos. Thank you all for looking and I look forward to what you all and others have to say! (and Happy Fourth).
@Pickin and Grinin Does this seem to match what an improperly annealed planchet should look like? Waiting to see if others chime in too, but I know you've found a few of these and have a good idea of how they look. The color on this one is interesting. A bit less than half of the coin has a reddish-silver color (top of obverse, bottom of reverse) and lacks the darker black color. Similar to what I've seen on some 2021 Crossing the Delaware improperly annealed coins over on Coin Community.
It is most likely an improperly annealed quarter, these get extremely hard to attribute once they have seen a bit of circulation. This quarter definitely has spent some time in commerce.
I have a few on these also, never posted them because when there in circulation! It's usually a could be!
Thank you both for the input. The roller lines and copper tone to me seem to give it away. It may have some patina from circulation but to me seems overall to be improperly annealed! Thanks all.
