A call this my "old king coin with the stick figure leaning up against a circle." In reality, I think this is a 1787 Nova Emborac half-penny as shown on page 68 of the 2024 Red Book. The Red Book indicates that a grade of AG for this coin with "figure facing right" is worth about $50. I think this would probably grade less than AG. I'd appreciate any thoughts about what you think an appropriate grade should be. Is this worth slabbing? Many thanks!
I don't equate value in this case. It's definitely more of a "historical" piece. My oldest coin that I've ever found while Metal Detecting is a 1733 King George here in the States! I just have it in a 2x2 holder and take it out every once in a while and just enjoy it as ugly as it is (because of condition).
Nice looking well circulated coin. I see no reason to get it slabbed, even if you wanted to sell it most colonial collectors seem to prefer raw coins.
Yes, it's Nova Eborac. Given that the Red Book price is $50 in AG-3, and this piece is a bit lower than that, I would say that it's not worthwhile to have it certified. NGC graded this one AU-53.
I like that coin @johnmilton Thank you for sharing a great example of what it once was! I appreciate the direction
