I assume it was a direct link to the CU site.

   ? Dear Just curious,

The use of the word "Ignorant" has become a misunderstood and degrading term for the less educated among us. As I posted long ago, I AM IGNORANT with regard to brain surgery.

Joe Blow, who asks a genuine question like: "Is my 2088 PENNY genuine," is an ignorant collector. He has posted here to learn something and we all try to help.

Someone like @Mike Diamond is a "well respected and identified by name expert in his field." You may be also; however, AFAIK you are not "named." ;)

Nope, I believe he was asking the same question twice at the time it was answered.

I don't like the idea of an Answered button that completely closes the thread. It prevents someone else from sharing their similar coins, or bringing up any interesting discussion about the coin that may not have been touched on before, etc. That idea that some of you expressed that once the experts answer the thread it should be shut down to prevent newbies of people with less experience from commenting seems like a bad thing. There is nothing wrong with a newbie giving his opinion or asking a question. If you don't want it, just ignore it and focus on the posts you prefer. No need to shut down the thread and stifle conversation and healthy debate on a coin or a numismatics topic. How else are the newbies going to learn and become future experts/informed collectors? It just sounds like an elitist feature.

Is the Collector's Universe forum PCGS' parent company forum? If it is I don't think it can ever properly compete with this site because here you're free to voice opinions contrary to what is good for the company...so long as you play by the rules.

It does not close the thread. The OP indicates he is satisfied with the answers he has received. I asked how to do something on the forum. The first reply answered it. One other did also at the same time. Any other member of CU can post on the thread. I'm not looking as I don't care - it was answered.

Note: This is in the question/answer forum. The coin forum where someone asks what a characteristic on a coin is works the same but there will probably be continued back and forth from folks calling a die break PMD.:hilarious::hilarious::hilarious::hilarious:.

I have heard that some comments are deleted. I was posting on the condition of end-stage corrosion of a graded dollar and the thread was closed. :arghh:

And because it's so widely misunderstood as a "degrading term", using it in its original sense (unaware of relevant information) is a bad idea. A bit like using a certain three-letter word for "happy and carefree", or a certain five-letter word for "female dog", or a certain five-letter word for "cat".

Instead of saying "ignorant" and then taking a few more posts to say "no, no, I only meant not yet sufficiently knowledgeable", why not just lead with "not yet sufficiently knowledgeable"?

    Yes.

There's a lot of knowledge over there though, and for that reason alone it shouldn't be dismissed. All forums, no matter the subject, have their up and down sides (CT is no exception) unfortunately.

With the slightest of research my name is readily available. Just click the link in my signature file, I am the only one named Mike associated with the podcast.

Perhaps because the overly sensitive among us could easily take offense to that too? Unfortunately, it's becoming more and more clear we live in a world where no matter what one does, says, or tries, even if their intent is obvious, it's going to bother or be misinterpreted by someone. Education and common sense be damned... it's "feelings" that matter most! Everyone gets a cookie!

I just took a look at their World and Ancient coins threads at CU. It's dead in comparison to both communities here. First, both are mixed. No offense, but the people who are after 19th century South American coinage could care less about Roman silver victoriatus or quinarius coinage, and vice-versa.

Also, only 3 ancient coins posts in like a month. LoL. Our forum gets 8 new threads alone on a slow day. The operation over there looks very U.S. coins centered, so woe to us non-US collectors.

    I'm a half-fast typist and a busy man! :cigar:
I should rather use 8 keystrokes than 34 keystrokes (including spaces) to express myself while answering a silly post.

Color me LAZY. Besides, I don't log on to "unknown" websites. :D

IMO The ancient coin form here is the best and most active. The foreign coin forum on Collectors Community is best. And there is something for everyone on US coins. Some real experts post on NGC.

I suspect this will persist until they start slabbing ancients.
