Well, the good news is that you should be able to get better close-up pictures when you have it in-hand. :)

I have the 12-D. The OP photo looks like an S to me, my D is more solid and filled. This mm looks like it has the breaks in it to be an S.
Anxious to see the magnification. Nice pick up if it turns out to be a key date.

When it comes to V nickels, Doug (KoinJester) is a sharp one. One of the better that I know.

Was the MM hubbed on the 1912-D, so all the mint marks were in the same position?

As far as I know they were done by hand, so yes they could change, but there was only one die pair for the 12s that I know of.

Edit. I hope I'm wrong but everything I see leans D but it's a pic of a well worn coin vs in hand

Good enough. I didn't mean to sound doubtful. What I know about V nickels you could put in the eye of a needle and still poke a camel through. I haven't even voted in the poll yet. But an interesting thread, I may learn something.

Interestingly enough, the polls say 10-1 that it's an S. It will be fun to see what it actually is.

If memory serves me correctly, I believe there were at least two, with one somewhat closer to the circle/dot than the other, and most clear on higher grade examples. That said, beyond necessity this isn't an area of personal interest, so please do take as you will.

Both photos are from the Heritage archives, and are of PCGS examples.

How can you say neither? It clearly has a mintmark and is clearly an S

Books, I take it all in stride, I was going off memory when I posted that, as was on the road without my notes. Thanks for correcting my misstatement. Now in curious to find my notes when I get home to see if the other has the die crack from rim to mm

No, no... "correcting" you wasn't at all my intent, but only to present what I believed to be the case, like you, going only on memory. In fact, the only reason I searched out photos was because I was second guessing myself. This isn't one of the areas I'm that familiar with, and the only reason I believed this to be true was because it was a necessity to know the positions when buying on the fly, especially considering the relatively high value of the coin. That said, I would most certainly accept your knowledge in this area over that of my own, and look forward to learning what you discover in your notes.

Thanks! I have a little hope yet. It's in the mail and on the way. I'll post new photos when I receive it.

    Please do!

That said, after spending a fairly considerable amount of time looking at what we have thus far, I am unable to convince myself I'm seeing anything other than a D. I certainly hope I'm wrong and it would be a pleasure to be so, but if you look closely at the style of the used S and compare, being sure to take your coin's condition into consideration, there are too many maybes, what ifs, and ifs needed in order to make it fit. The upper right part of the mintmark, and upper left to a lesser extent, is what stops me even though I can see what the others are (although being an S fits better as a mirror image). On an undamaged S one wouldn't expect the upper right to have such a rounded appearance, while the opposite goes for the upper left. Both would be more indicative of a D.

As it stands I don't believe the photos are good enough to even bother with an overlay, at least one done properly and not as a certain someone does skewing it to force the results to match his opinion. It could go either way, but there's just not enough information at present to make a conclusive call either way IMO.

I agree and I struggled with this one in my head for a long time. It looks like it's somewhere between D and S, which likely makes it an S. Having said that, 13 other people agree that it looks like an S. That's quite a bit of folks, though I believe we might see what we want to see. Time will tell, eBay says to expect the coins October 20.
