What would you expert collectors do?

I throw these two coins up to show some graded pieces.

This 1921 Peace Dollar is graded MS-65. You might question the grade because of the mark on the neck. Under a strong glass, the mark looks like a planchet defect that was there when the coin was struck. Since the neck in the deepest part of the die, it didn't flatten it out. Even so, you can say this is not an MS-65.



This 1923 is graded MS-64. I have never upgraded to an MS-65, because I am not a huge Peace Dollar admirer.



An MS-65 can have a light hairline on the cheek, but nothing serious.

I have one that is 100% useless. Everytime Microsoft upgraded their software, it would not work. I got Dino-Lite to upgrade my software two times, but it was like a dog chasing its tail. To me the camera was a $500 waste of money.

 

I would not buy one either. A DSLR with a macro lens is all I use.

Here is what I use. It's a bit dirty right now haven't cleaned up the coins in a while.

 

It's weird that I was looking at these between our last replies. I think I found something that's not that complicated and will work. But I really appreciate your input, we were both thinking on the same wave length!
I also was looking at Cannon PowerShot cameras pricing. I have an older one and their prices have oddly gone way up since I bought mine 20 years ago. Most electronics have come down in price but cameras have not. I just need a stand and I realize a tripod will not work for one I want. I need one that goes straight vertical, and possibly another ring light since I already have one. I think I just found one at a very reasonable price.

You can't learn to grade by photos. You need to examine hundreds, if not thousands, of examples to form a basis.

I think you're vastly overgrading the coin. Looks MS62. Might even be AU but it's impossible to tell from that pic.

 

Eventually we'll see. Peace dollars are harder than Morgans because of extremely weak strikes. But lack of flaws are lack of flaws/ bagmarks and it will be what it is. We've had this argument before when I laughed at a Morgan that had almost no chest feathers, graded at 64 which I thought was utterly ridiculous.

 

When you find that incredible luster, it can be hard to emulate. What ever you do just make sure you know your camera. Nd what look you are trying to achieve.
